Caroline's actions

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 120 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 1 hours in my community.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Low Carbon Diet

Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Consume only Needs vs Wants

The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

I knew beef production was one of the most ecologically damaging foods for how much water is required and methane it produces but I was not aware that cheese was so high on the list for similar reasons. I will definitely work to be more conscious of my cheese intake after learning about this!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Explore My Area
Where did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?

I went to Weedon Island preserve which is very close to where I live but I've never been! I hiked along a couple of the trails and really got to see what the natural ecosystems of my area are like.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Consume only Needs vs Wants
Consuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?

I have fallen into the habit of stopping on my way to work for coffee once or twice a week and also getting a little whenever I stop for gas. These things are usually individually packaged or in single use containers which produces a lot more waste than making coffee at home or buying things in bulk. This exercise has definitely made me more aware of what those habits contribute my carbon footprint.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Calculate My Carbon Impact
Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

My current commute to work is 62 miles round trip and I had not considered how much that was contributing to my carbon footprint. I will definitely ty to walk and bike to places more on the weekends to try to compensate for the rest of the week,
