Jonah's actions
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Climate + Air
Low Carbon Diet
Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Endangered Species
Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 15 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Cooking Oil DisposalDid anything about this action surprise you? Do you use more or less oil than you thought?
Jonah Svensson 4/29/2024 8:44 PMThis action does not surprise me. I use about the amount of oil I expected. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Calculate My Carbon ImpactWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Jonah Svensson 4/29/2024 8:44 PMI think I emit the most carbon from electricity. I will be more vigilant when it comes to what sources are using electricity and reduce my overall usage. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Low Carbon DietWhich high carbon foods will you eat less of, and what are some low carbon options you'll choose instead?
Jonah Svensson 4/22/2024 10:38 AMI am going to eat less beef and pork, which are high carbon foods. I will eat more tofu, beans, and nuts, which are low carbon options. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
Jonah Svensson 4/16/2024 12:34 PMI went to Terrace Point/long marine lab in Santa Cruz. It was very relaxing, pretty windy, some good birds including two Marbled Murrelets... -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Save the BeesWhat did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!
Jonah Svensson 4/16/2024 12:33 PMLavender! This is a plant that bees always liked in my garden growing up and it's nice to replant them in the front yard. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Endangered SpeciesWhat endangered species did you learn about and what did you learn?
Jonah Svensson 4/13/2024 9:46 PMI learned about the small tooth sawfish, which lives off the coast of Florida. There have been concerns about their numbers for a time, but recent reports indicate a greater number washing up than is standard. Some individuals have been seen spinning in the water in distress. Scientists speculate that this has something to do with an algae that produces a neurotoxin; this algae is in greater numbers due to warmer water and global warming. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Jonah Svensson 4/11/2024 2:17 PMThat a significant amount of plastic is wasted via the use of plastic water bottles. I will avoid using plastic water bottles, to avoid the use of plastic but also to avoid supporting the companies that produce and market them.
