Maria's actions

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Cooking Oil Disposal

Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.

Action Track: Community

JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON

I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON

I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN

I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR

On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Reduce Animal Products

One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 0 vegan meals each day this week.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Learn about Native Species

The world is full of unique species. I will spend 10 minutes each day learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.

Earth Month has sped by. I have learnt a lot of new things but more importantly I am changing my habits. Using the car less, using my 'bags for life', planning meals, reusing before recycling, collecting litter and generally taking more notice of my surroundings. I will try to ensure that, for me, every month is Earth Month.

One area that I want / need to improve on is food waste - so today we planned out the weeks meals and bought only the items we needed (although I did sneak in a bar of chocolate as a treat)

Spent my lunchtime today watching the wildlife in our back garden - blue tits, sparrows, wood pigeons, great tits, blackbirds, crows as well as a myriad of insects and a frog on the edge of the pond - each one going about their daily lives. It was incredibly relaxing and a nice break from emails and customer phone calls.

I hadn't realised that human's made up such a small percentage of life on earth - yet they cause the biggest problems

I missed the ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR yesterday - so my task today is to watch the recording and see what I can learn

We already wash at 30'C (and only do a load every other day (lot less than when the 2 boys lived at home!) but am now researching the best method to trap microplastics as we don't have room for an external filter.

Braved the showers today to walk to the shops - previously I would have taken the car because of the risk of getting wet - but I made it there and back without getting drenched

    Happy Earth Day Everyone.
Rather grainy photo of our bird feeders (taken through the dining room window as its raining (yet again).
These were all full yesterday so something is enjoying the food !

WE have sunflower seeds (which is empty), peanuts (which the squirrel loves), mixed wild bird seed and fat balls. The fat balls seem to be eaten more when they have young to feed

These are fabulous! What is the feeder that looks like a metal cage? What's inside it?

Fitted the garden webcam this afternoon - it will be interesting to see what bird species we attract to our feeders.

Well fingers crossed you'll get some interesting footage, we were surprised with some of the footage on ours, given were fairly central in a town I mainly installed it as a hedgehog cam , we've had a fox a few times but most surprising we had a couple of visits by a badger but nothing recently.... but that might explain the hedgehogs disappearance....hopefully not

Learnt a lot more about my water footprint today - so need to make changes to the toilet flushing and also the teeth washing regimes.
