Margie's actions

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Beauty and Personal Products

Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 10 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Cooking Oil Disposal

Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Learn About Water Justice in My Area

I will spend at least 10 minutes a day using the resources provided to learn about water justice and find out how I can get involved in local initiatives.

DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Low Water Gardening

Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Grow Local

I will research and plant a garden filled with native fruits, vegetables, and flowers to nurture local wildlife and ecosystems. I will find nearby nurseries that offer plants native to my area.

DAILY ACTIONS

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

DAILY ACTIONS

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

Climate + Air Choose Renewable Energy
If you are already signed up for your utility's renewable option, what other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage? If your company doesn't offer a renewable option, were they open to your request of this in the future?

Though we already have solar panels installed and took advantage of low to zero electricity bill, we are still taking actions to reduce our energy usage. Instead of opening the air conditioner due to hot weather, we open our windows and doors so that fresh air can enter and circulate in our home. With this, instead of consuming the energy from the solar panel, it will be exported to Electric Distribution Company as their additional source of energy. Last month, the exported energy from the solar panels is greater than the imported energy or our usage energy.

Summer has arrived in the Philippines, and the weather is currently extremely hot. Some people are annoyed, but this type of weather is beneficial to me. Our 9 solar panels will harvest a large amount of solar energy that we may use for our daily electricity needs, with the excess being exported and sold to the Meralco (Electric Power Distribution Company). My next electric bill will again definitely be ZERO. I recommend everyone, if they have a budget, to consider investing in something like this. We will undoubtedly save money in the future while also protecting the environment.

Did anything about this action surprise you? Do you use more or less oil than you thought?

Surprisingly, I dispose of cooking oil properly. Even basic domestic actions help to preserve the environment.

Since I started using non-stick pans, I use lesser or no oil at all when cooking! :)
