Autumn's actions

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 20 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Cooking Oil Disposal

Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Explore My Area
Where did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?

I went out to the Santa Monica Mountains in Calabasas to both explore the area and learn more about the area I live. The area I went to is a trail that is frequented by many hikers, and it was clear that many people use the destination at the end (a lookout) as a place to drink, as we were finding many glass bottles all throughout the trail. I think it was really interesting to see because there were so much trash, and to me felt more unexpected as most of the trails I hike at are generally well-kept.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water Bottle
What did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?

The more I spend time outdoors, the more it is clear to me how much waste there is in our environment. I want to do my part in reducing my plastic use as well as keeping it out of nature as much as possible by using reusable products as frequently as possible, and being more conscientious about what I am purchasing.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Keep My Community Clean
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

It definitely makes me feel more connected as I can see the difference I'm making in my visual environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Cooking Oil Disposal
Did anything about this action surprise you? Do you use more or less oil than you thought?

    Autumn Short's avatar
    Autumn Short 4/24/2024 1:20 AM
I thought it was surprising to learn that a lot of times cooking oils get into the water system, and even though the water gets treated, we still end up drinking the unhealthy chemicals used in treatment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Freshwater + Oceans Dishwasher Efficiency
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    Autumn Short's avatar
    Autumn Short 4/24/2024 1:15 AM
I think practicing techniques that save water regularly will allow us to be more prepared when those challenges come up.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I often use reusable ziploc bags instead of disposable ones, as well as reusable straws, and reusable bags instead of plastic ones.
