Land + Forests
Compost Food Waste
Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 4 hours in my community.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Action Track: Community
Share My "Why"
I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Borrow Before I BuyHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Amy Schupbach 4/19/2024 12:29 PMTrying to borrow a Kentucky Derby hat from Ms. Trish at Dance Studio B instead of buying one since I only need it for a one-time use! -
Amy Schupbach 4/15/2024 10:50 AMLots of extra time spent outdoors over the weekend. Granddaughter's birthday party Saturday evening, watch her play on the trampoline and we played with balloons in the yard. Sunday 60 minutes of outdoor yoga in the sunshine and afternoon walk with the big doggo, Jax. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Amy Schupbach 4/10/2024 12:38 PMI love our FK adopt-a-highway quarterly trash pickup events. It is a nice way to get to know other people in the plant that I may not have met otherwise. It is also great exercise! I think picking up litter makes us feel more connected to the community because there is a sense of pride looking at the finished outcome.-
Andrew Cox 4/11/2024 12:04 PMI agree. Love doing this too (Can't beat this N.C. Springtime weather). I am committing to getting us some better grabbers this year!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Amy Schupbach 4/01/2024 7:25 AMWe don't have a dishwasher, so hand washing is the only option in our household. I feel like I could do a better job at using let water by filling the whole sink and letting everything soak and rinsing all dishes at the end rather than sort of one by one washing things like I have been doing. -
Amy Schupbach 4/01/2024 7:21 AMMy company was part of the Eco Challenge last year so I am joining our team again this year. One permanent change that I made was bringing real silverware from home for lunch instead of using throw-away plastic utensils. I'm still doing that 1 year later!
