Land + Forests
Compost Food Waste
Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.

Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests 30 for 30 in NatureWhat have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?
Kailah Sanders 4/24/2024 8:42 AMI have enjoyed spending time in the fresh air with my family. It has made me feel more energized. Last night we got to go to the strawberry patch and it was beautiful out. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-FreeWhere did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?
Kailah Sanders 4/23/2024 6:03 AMI use a lot of plastic day to day and need to start using other alternatives. While at a NC beach this weekend we opted to use paper bags instead of plastic bags. Here is a good start :) -
Kailah Sanders 4/16/2024 11:35 AMI am enjoying the nice weather and taking all the opportunities to pick up litter and enjoy time outside with my family. Keep doing great everyone :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?
Kailah Sanders 4/09/2024 5:59 AMMy husband and I have chickens and we give them our compost food. It saves on trash bags and trips to the dump.-
Andrew Cox 4/11/2024 12:01 PMAwesome! This is a double positive as it keeps weight out of landfill AND helps improve greenhouse gas footprint. When food breaks down in landfills, its much worse for air then when you compost (or give to chickens). Great work

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Kailah Sanders 4/03/2024 7:31 AMAfter having a baby there is a lot more to wash with bottles and such. I use the dishwasher as much as possible instead of handwashing to be more efficient.-
Amber Weischedel 4/03/2024 7:42 AMI use the dishwasher as much as possible to reduce the water and on the plus my kitchen stays cleaner.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Kailah Sanders 4/03/2024 6:16 AMI live on a main road in town and I pick up trash by my house and in my yard daily. I not only do this for the environment but it makes our community look better. This connects me more to my community by being involved and it makes a difference in how our community looks when people ride by.
