"If you're adding contaminants like oil to the water, it creates what's called FOG [fat, oil, and grease]," says Booker. "It takes a longer process [and] more chemicals to treat the water for us to then drink. It becomes unhealthy if we're adding a lot of oil [and] old grease to our water system."

Mercedes's actions
Land + Forests
Compost Food Waste
Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Action Track: Community
Share My "Why"
I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 1 hours in my community.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

Mercedes Salles 4/18/2024 8:49 AMI finally have my first compost set up in my backyard! I’ve been collecting scraps throughout the last couple weeks and pulling lots of weeds! I’ve got it all in place with a little help from some compost starter, in a rotating bin. I hope my first attempt is a success! 🤞 -
Mercedes Salles 4/09/2024 11:13 AMThis statistic is brutal: " The EPA estimates that American households improperly dump about 193 million gallons of used oil every year, or roughly the equivalent of 17 Exxon Valdez oil spills. (EPA) "
I'm going to be working on my impact. ASAP -
Mercedes Salles 4/07/2024 8:24 AMI did a litter clean up while walking my dog, Renaldo. I filled one blue bag full and the neighbor across the street shouted a thank you and offered me another bag while tossing the one I filled. I was able to clean two locations I walk by frequently that I’ve wanted to clean up for some time now. 👍 -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Cooking Oil DisposalDid anything about this action surprise you? Do you use more or less oil than you thought?
Mercedes Salles 4/05/2024 9:35 AMI never thought about how much harder it would be to clean our water and how many more chemicals would be involved. I wonder if this is why people keep telling me our water is "hard"? Much more to learn this month!
