Gianna's actions

Freshwater + Oceans

Cooking Oil Disposal

Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.

COMPLETED 26
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Learn About Water Justice in My Area

I will spend at least 30 minutes a day using the resources provided to learn about water justice and find out how I can get involved in local initiatives.

COMPLETED 25
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 25
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Low Water Gardening

Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 4 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 24
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 30 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 5 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 22
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 45 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Share My "Why"

I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
What did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?

I learned that many cleaning products contain chemicals that are harmful for both the environment and human health. I did not make my own cleaning products but I hope to do that soon!

Each Sunday my university holds an event called Clean Sweep. It is where our community comes together to clean up trash. When I can I love to participate in this event. I love hanging with friends and making an impact on our environment. This makes me feel happy and grateful that I can be apart of making our community a better place.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Low Water Gardening
What are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.

In my area the most prominent water concerns are pollution, flooding, drought, and privatization.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Gianna Rossi 's avatar
    Gianna Rossi 4/29/2024 9:02 AM
On a regular basis I use coffee cups and plastic bags. I use these items when I go grab coffee and when I go grocery shopping. In order to stop using these items to help save my environment I decided to use alternative things that are safer for the environment. When I grab my coffee I will bring my own reusable cup and use that. When I go grocery shopping I will use my own reusable bags that are not plastic. By thinking of alternative items I will be helping my environment and making a difference.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water Bottle
What did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?

    Gianna Rossi 's avatar
    Gianna Rossi 4/29/2024 8:58 AM
It is very crazy and mind-blowing to me how much plastic we consume and how much ends up in our environment. It makes me sad to think that the plastic ends up in many different environments and how it affects different animals. Because of this I will take certain actions to reduce my use of plastic. I have decided that instead of using plastic water bottles I will use a reusable water bottle. By doing this I can save at least 5 plastic water bottles a day!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

    Gianna Rossi 's avatar
    Gianna Rossi 4/13/2024 2:19 PM
I learned about understanding what your water footprint is and how my daily activities have an impact on water resources. From this I learned that there are many ways that I can save water at home by taking shorter showers or turning off the running water while brushing my teeth! After learning about my water footprint and its impact I will reduce and be aware of the water I use by not letting the water run for long periods of time.
