Lauri's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 1 hours in my community.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

ONE-TIME ACTION

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

DAILY ACTIONS

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

This past weekend I visited a friend for dinner and brought home some flowers and ground cover from her yard. She was thinning out her gardens and now I have new plants and flowers in mine. Looking forward to a new yellow Iris next year and filled in some ground cover that she would have pitched. I love our annual swap.

I'm loving all this mindful time in nature! This weekend our trees suddenly popped with leaves! Yellow was definitely a noticeable color everywhere, in wildflower blooms in ground cover and peeking out between the trees on our hillsides. I saw a Great Blue Heron up close then in flight. super amazing! I've been noticing some trash along the way so I'm going to grab a trash bag on my next few walks and do some clean up.

During April I've been much more present in my time outdoors watching daily bloom cycles for the tulips, daffodils, iris and trees like cherry, pear, forsythia and tulip. On rainy days, I sit quietly on the porch during my outdoor time and listen for insect, bird and animal sounds. There's a lot going on out there when you really take a listen. Lastly, I did some journaling during the solar eclipse and have added this in as a meditative habit when I'm outdoors. I might even take a drawing class so my visual journaling improves!

It was a beautiful weekend here in NKY so I spent several hours each day cleaning up my yard, outside furniture, set up my patio and took walks.

How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

I borrowed my neighbor's electric hedge trimmer to shape a bush in my front yard and grabbed a few pots from him to plant some seeds to start my summer flower gardening.
