Freshwater + Oceans

Learn About Water Justice in My Area

I will spend at least 5 minutes a day using the resources provided to learn about water justice and find out how I can get involved in local initiatives.

COMPLETED 12
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 5 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Regenerative Agriculture and Me

Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 10 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 10 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Low Water Gardening

Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

No waste of waste water

The waste water coming out from a water purifier is always made to drain out from the sink in most of the households, instead it can be used to water plants, or to wash dishes.

COMPLETED 15
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Use Muscle Power

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

COMPLETED 16
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 15
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 16
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 5 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

Who is affected by polluted water or a lack of access to water in your region? How are they affected?

    Shrishti Prajapati's avatar
    Shrishti Prajapati 4/04/2024 11:11 PM
Urban Slums: In densely populated urban areas, informal settlements or slums often lack access to clean water and sanitation services. Residents may rely on shared or communal water sources that are easily contaminated, leading to the spread of diseases like diarrhea and hepatitis.
Farmers and Agricultural Workers: Pollution from agricultural runoff, including pesticides and fertilizers, can contaminate water sources used for drinking, irrigation, and livestock.
Healthcare Facilities: Hospitals and healthcare facilities require clean water for sanitation, hygiene, and patient care. In regions with limited access to clean water, healthcare services may be compromised, leading to increased risk of infections.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community Pick Up the Phone
What do all of us have in common, regardless of politics, race, religion, occupation, or place we live? How can finding common ground help us as a society and as a species?

    Shrishti Prajapati's avatar
    Shrishti Prajapati 4/04/2024 3:24 AM
Regardless of our differences in politics, race, religion, occupation, or geographic location, all human beings share several fundamental aspects in common:
    1. Biological Needs: We all require basic necessities such as food, water, shelter, and healthcare to survive and thrive.
2.Emotional Needs: Every individual experiences emotions such as love, joy, sadness, fear, and anger. These emotions are universal human experiences that transcend cultural and societal boundaries.
3.Desire for Connection: Humans are social creatures who crave connection and belonging. We all seek meaningful relationships with others, whether it be with family, friends, or community members.
4.Aspirations and Dreams: Regardless of our background, we all have hopes, dreams, and aspirations for the future. These can include personal goals, career ambitions, or visions for a better world.

Finding common ground among diverse groups can foster several benefits for society and the human species as a whole:

    1. Promotes Understanding and Empathy: Recognizing our shared humanity can cultivate empathy and understanding for others who may hold different beliefs or perspectives. This can help bridge divides and reduce prejudice and discrimination.
    2. Encourages Collaboration and Cooperation: Identifying common goals and values can facilitate collaboration and cooperation across diverse communities. By working together, we can address shared challenges more effectively and create positive change.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
What did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?

    Shrishti Prajapati's avatar
    Shrishti Prajapati 4/04/2024 2:42 AM
Ingredients commonly found in cleaning products can have significant impacts on water and biodiversity:
Chemical Pollution: Many conventional cleaning products contain chemicals such as phosphates, ammonia, chlorine, and synthetic fragrances. When these chemicals are washed down drains and into waterways
Toxicity to Aquatic Life: Some cleaning product ingredients, such as surfactants and disinfectants, can be toxic to aquatic organisms
Microplastics: Many cleaning products contain microplastics, such as polyethylene beads or microbeads, which are used as abrasives or thickeners. These microplastics can enter waterways through wastewater and contribute to plastic pollution in aquatic environments.

Homemade cleaners can be effective for tasks such as surface cleaning, removing stains, and deodorizing, while also being safer for the environment and potentially more cost-effective in the long run.
