Andrea (Ang)'s actions
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Land + Forests
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Land + Forests
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 2 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Weekly Meal PlanningHow did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?
Andrea (Ang) Ortiz 4/15/2024 12:48 PMMeal planning is new to me as my family eats differently. I have been intentional with my meal planning and am able to plan at least one meal per day. It has helped me avoid food waste and think of creative meals that everyone would enjoy- avoiding making different things for everyone.-
Samantha Maple 4/15/2024 1:16 PMMeal planning with a family is definitely a challenge with all different preferences!

Andrea (Ang) Ortiz 4/03/2024 4:58 AMMy daughter and started to use reusable water bottles instead of plastic water bottles a few months ago. I began to purchase water for a stand up unit and we use that to fill our reusable water bottles. It was definitely something we had to be very intentional with in the beginning as we were so used to grabbing a plastic bottle and going. After a few weeks it did get easier to remember to fill up the reusable water bottle and now it is a habit.-
Lisa Doherty 4/15/2024 12:21 PMGreat idea to use less plastic, nice to see your daughter joined too!
