Rachel's actions
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Reduce Animal Products
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 3 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Action Track: Community
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 30 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 15 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Land + Forests
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 45 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Rachel Orrison 4/24/2024 10:18 AMI joined a call today about Deloitte's sustainability and client conversations. It was interesting to hear about the things Deloitte is doing, and what others are doing. We attempted composting a while ago but didn't stick with it; thinking about exploring it again (not that we will be like DU!). -
Rachel Orrison 4/23/2024 12:39 PMWe were very busy this weekend, but I'm excited to plant some seeds with my kids this week for some flower for the pollinators! -
Rachel Orrison 4/19/2024 2:29 PMLast year I had 5 minute showers as one of my daily goals, and while it wasn't an option this year I have been trying to keep it in mind! Easier some mornings than others to move quickly!-
Adeze Chukwu 4/19/2024 2:35 PMYou are so right! spending only 5 minutes in the shower doesn't just save water, it also saves your time.

Rachel Orrison 4/18/2024 12:22 PMMy parents live just over a mile away, so instead of driving over to see them I walked. I appreciate that I can work from home and so get to cut down on my driving in general.-
Malia Rains 4/22/2024 6:38 AMI love this! I live super close to Askarben and a grocery store so i've been walking to those places as much as i can instead of driving!

Rachel Orrison 4/16/2024 12:11 PMHit two vegan meals today! But my meal plan for dinner includes garlic bread so won't make it there (although I suppose you could if planned correctly!). Meal planning helps take stress out of my evenings - I appreciate at the end of the day not having to make a decision about what to cook. -
Rachel Orrison 4/15/2024 9:33 AMI didn't meet my 1 vegan meal goal on Sunday (but did get the 3 meatless) - there was a lot going on and between events and treats I didn't hold strong! It definitely takes planning and will power.-
Malia Rains 4/22/2024 6:41 AMIt can be so hard ... especially when there are events, parties, outings, and just being busy. I have been trying to eat less meet and made a burrito bowl last night with taco seasoned chickpeas rather than ground beef!

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
Rachel Orrison 4/15/2024 9:30 AMWe went to a large local park we hadn't been to in a long time, and walked on some trails we had not done before. We also found a bike path we want to explore another time! It's always interesting to find new spots, which in turn encourage you to come out again and then find another new spot. -
Rachel Orrison 4/11/2024 10:57 AMI went to an event at my son's school this morning, and without thinking about it I grabbed a disposable water bottle they offered me. I should I have thought to bring my own reusable one!-
Angie Doss 4/11/2024 10:58 AMYou are starting to remember-it will soon start to be a habit for you. Great thinking!

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Beauty and Personal ProductsWhat new insights did you gain about the skincare products you use? Did you reach out to advocate for refillable or recyclable packaging?
Rachel Orrison 4/10/2024 10:58 AMThe only thing I found was my deodorant - I had purchased a locally made option at the suggestion of a friend and the shop does sell refills! One question I didn't really find an answer to was if I purchased a larger bottle of something, does that equal less plastic in the end?
