Sarah's actions

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 30 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Go Plastic-Free

Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Write Letters or Emails

I will gather a group of friends, family, neighbors or colleagues and write 3 letters or emails to public officials or companies to advocate for planet-friendly policies.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Pick Up the Phone

I will gather a group of friends, family, neighbors or colleagues to make 3 phone calls to public officials or companies to advocate for planet-friendly policies.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Advocate for Forest Protection

Using my voice can help create a more sustainable and just world. I will contact 3 local, regional, or national decision makers to advocate for public policy that protects forests and improves their ability to sequester carbon and nourish biodiversity.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Compost Food Waste

Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Forest-Friendly Foods

I will look for sustainable palm oil products with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSP) label. I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation and opt for ones that help sustain healthy communities and forests.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Reduce Animal Products

One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.

COMPLETED 27
DAILY ACTIONS

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

This month is great! Earth Day was such a cool event yesterday. It felt good to be a part of a community working on a project that is great for the community park. Also, I enjoyed talking with the park Rangers to learn more about plants and other wildlife. Confluence Park in Issaquah is also a great place to watch the salmon spawning (:
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

    Sarah O'Connell's avatar
    Sarah O'Connell 4/26/2024 6:02 AM
I have been using the dishwasher instead of washing dishes by hand. for both laundry and dishes, I will not start a load until it is completely full. I have also reduced the amount of time I spend in the shower
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community Sustainability Lunch and Learn

    Sarah O'Connell 4/26/2024 5:57 AM
I went to our Companys Earth Day where we had lunch then went to local park to learn about the types of invasive plant species. We then spent time trying to irradicate these types of plants in the park.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

    Sarah O'Connell's avatar
    Sarah O'Connell 4/15/2024 7:58 AM
Supply by demand. The supply will be reduced if the demand has also been reduced.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

My system has actually been feeling better because I have lessened my intake of Chocolate. This is hard to completely quit. However, I have noticed a huge difference when I cold turkey quit Coffee. I did not realize how it was contributing to my acid reflux. Tea has been a much more calming and reliable source of caffeine.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

    Sarah O'Connell's avatar
    Sarah O'Connell 4/02/2024 11:57 AM
There are so many compostable products. I am new to this as I am from California. It is a smelly process for sure but I love that I can re-incorporate it into my gardening.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Reduce Animal Products
How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Sarah O'Connell's avatar
    Sarah O'Connell 4/02/2024 11:56 AM
I thought my energy levels would change but they did not. I did end up eating a larger portion size of the veggies than I would meat. I honestly am not sure if this is a better method, but it does not hurt me to try, and I enjoy the idea that less animal suffer in the process.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Freshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-Free
Where did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?

    Sarah O'Connell's avatar
    Sarah O'Connell 4/02/2024 11:53 AM
I never realized that microplastic beads were in my daily facewash. I have switched to a more environmentally friendly no plastic facewash instead. Also I have switched my plastic Tupperware, to glass. Using glass jars instead of plastic zip locks. Wooden - compostable plates & cutlery instead of disposable plastic
