Elizabeth's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Grow Local

I will research and plant a garden filled with native fruits, vegetables, and flowers to nurture local wildlife and ecosystems. I will find nearby nurseries that offer plants native to my area.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 30 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 15 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 15 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 22
DAILY ACTIONS

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Did you know that many tree trimming companies and municipalities provide FREE mulch? We just had our trees trimmed and the company left the wood chips for us to use in our gardens. They also said that anytime we need more, we can just call and they will deliver another load. Check out options by looking into tree trimming companies in your area or by checking with your municipality for public areas where free wood chips are available to pick up.

Happy Earth Day! What are you doing to celebrate today? This week I commit to taking in my e-waste to work where our building is holding an e-waste recycling event. I also plan to return used batteries to the library near my house, print out free shipping labels to return other clothing recycling items, and return my used cosmetics and toiletry containers to a store in the mall that will recycle them via TerraCycle. Let's keep it up and make every day Earth Day!

Nice! I celebrated the Earth Month by promoting a community sharing habit in our little community platform by posting the things that I no longer need but might still be useful for others. 😊🌎

It's spring cleaning time! Many cities, towns, and counties have e-recycling and shredding events at their municipalities in May. Check yours to see if they participate or find one near you by Googling "E-Waste recycling events" in your town, county or state.

This is a great time to get rid of those old Christmas lights that don't work or that old TV, toaster, small appliance, and frayed charging cords that you didn't want to put in the trash. I can't wait to get rid of all my e-waste and feel good that it's not going into the trash!

Did you know your local Home Depot, Lowe's, Staples, library, and/or municipality may have drop off locations to dispose of all types of your used and dead batteries? Keep them out of the trash and landfills and recycle them today! https://www.call2recycle.org/

To all those who consume cosmetics, toiletries, and other similar hard to recycle mixed media containers...REJOICE! There are now more options that ever to recycle these items. Do like I do (for years now!) and bring your empty and clean containers to your local Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack, L'Occitane, select Sephora and Ulta retail stores to dump in their container recycling receptacles! Some of these stores, like L'Occitane, will even give you a discount for bringing back their used brand name item for recycling. Win/Win! Here is one of many programs: https://www.sephora.com/beauty/pact-collective-recycling-program

Check out this video clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9tWPLaeNxE from the CBS Sunday Morning on 4/14/24 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9tWPLaeNxEshow about recycling. Seeing more and more how recycling really doesn't do any good for a variety of reasons. Recycling is just a band-aid. What we need to do is STOP consuming plastics that can't be recycled. Bring those reusable bags. Change out your Tupperware to glass containers, bring your own reusable cutlery to work to eat your lunch. Big companies will only stop making plastics when WE tell them we don't want them anymore. It's up to US because this IS coming for our planet:

Fascinating article I read suggesting that "When we lead healthier, more balanced lives, we may find it easier to act more consciously and take better care of our environment. Consider this yet another reason to try to be more mindful today and every day. Food for thought and for sustainability!

Spring is the time to start thinking about lawn care! In addition to many villages and towns participating in "No Mow Months" to help bugs, bees, and other critters thrive, think about switching to organic lawn care. It's better for the environment, animals, and you! Just in time for those outdoor Easter egg hunts this weekend. I totally get that. This is a tough one. I think my village and surrounding villages only do this during May. It's very hard to leave it be in the spring when the grass grows so quickly with ideal conditions for growth from spring showers. :/ Happy Easter to you too!

i feel like my lawn would be a forest if not mowed for a month in the peak of summer, definitely something to think about. Happy Easter!

Think you can't recycle that thing you are about to throw in the trash such as your shaving razors and shaving cream cans or your kid's squeeze snack packet? Guess again! More and more companies are getting in on the sustainability action and you can too!
