Ariane's actions
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 5 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Climate + Air
Stay on the Ground
Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

So today was a good day. I have been outside all day long at the tree blooming festival in Werder. How nice is it to enjoy nature with a glass of fruit wine. A little bit of hiking here and there, hopping from farm to farm - and no my intention was not to get drunk but enjoy the athmosphere , music sunshine , birds, fresh air..-

Ariane Niejahr 4/23/2024 2:38 PMToday it was hard for me to accomplish a challenge: buying only the needs not the wants. There I do struggle when I go to the shop. The weather got cold and I needed a sportive warming shirt. I found one as well as a light sportive wind jacket that looked very nice. But then I asked myself do I need it urgently? I do have some other jackets I can use instead and decided against buying it. Sometimes it is just hard to go against your first wishful thinking. -
Ariane Niejahr 4/22/2024 11:07 AMToday is Earth Day! And what nice it is if in that day you celebrate the birthdates of two colleagues! So here it comes in a photo : my project of the weekend, celebrating Spring time and the diversity of flowers on Earth and its inhabitants( like butterflies 🦋 )-

So I went out to eat and what is interesting that with my bought bottle of water I can help support projects involved about the topic drinking water worldwide.. a good deed! -

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Borrow Before I BuyHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Ariane Niejahr 4/18/2024 6:32 AMWhen I was younger, I saw many sharing containers on the street, e.g. for clothes or shoes you do not use anymore and those then could be distributed to the needy. I always thought about being a good idea. Now, I hardly see those in my neighbourhood. It is very hard if you even gather things around, you would need a car in order to drive up so far to find sth. I am the opinion, that in every garbage collecting point there should be also a kind of container, that people can share their not needed stuff in there, so it gets distributed and not just thrown away. -
Ariane Niejahr 4/18/2024 6:22 AMSo, today, at lunch time, I was out in the green. Preparing myself for the company run next week. It is still a little bit cold, but hey, needed to start somewhere.. at least I can say I have breathed in 29 minutes of fresh air running around in the green edges of Berlin, enjoying nature before it rains -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Ariane Niejahr 4/17/2024 5:50 AMI don't think I can avoid the air travel in the future at all. But I can reduce my travels. There are also night trains in Europe e.g. which are very comfortable to travel with. WIth night beds. This is certainly an alternative.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Weekly Meal PlanningHow did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?
Ariane Niejahr 4/17/2024 5:48 AMSometimes it is hard to plan a menu for the week and to really stick with it. You get off work & maybe are not in the mood of cooking, because it was a harder and longer day, you've expected it to be - So sometimes I am struggling to fit in the planned schedule.-
