Linda's actions
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Climate + Air
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Climate + Air
Share My "Why"
I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Biodiversity and Me
I will spend at least 30 minutes each day researching what biodiversity is, how biodiversity positively impacts our world, and how the loss of biodiversity harms it. I will share what I learn on the feed.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce oversalting sidewalks, parking lots in snowbelt
https://www.wisaltwise.com/Oversalting https://fwwa.org/what-we-do/renew-our-waters/ Providing educational resources for understanding why and how to reduce use of road salt on sidewalks and parking lots, to reduce toxicity from urban runoff, into waterways.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 45 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Climate + Air
Declutter My Home Without the Landfill
Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Low Water Gardening
Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Low Water GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Linda Nett-Duesterhoeft 4/30/2024 7:44 AMStorm water can be reduced by using rain barrels to collect roof top runoff and then use the water for our property gardens. -
Linda Nett-Duesterhoeft 4/30/2024 7:40 AMOur EarthCare team requested a rain barrel to collect rain water from our building's rooftop. We plan to use the water for our gardens. I called our utility company and reviewed our building's water and storm water usage, and learned last summer our water usage increased from 3,000 gallons/quarter to 12,000 gallons. Therefore we are hoping to improve our impact on storm water runnoff by using rainbarrels.-
Linda Nett-Duesterhoeft 4/30/2024 7:40 AMAlso, a member did donate a rain barrel!!!

Linda Nett-Duesterhoeft 4/25/2024 7:27 AMI discovered new nature trails outside of Madison, and grounded myself by walking barefoot, as well as practicing Tai Chi in barefeet. Also enjoyed identifying new birds I have never noticed before.-
Mary Gerken 4/30/2024 7:07 AMYou inspire a barefoot walk today! Thanks!

Linda Nett-Duesterhoeft 4/25/2024 7:14 AMI have received my first order of compostable, plant-based 13 gallon garbage bags, lunch bags and 1 gallon food storage bags. I will continue to compost all my compostable food scraps.-
Mary Gerken 4/30/2024 7:10 AMWonderful. I received mulch for my yard and while placing it decided on a composting area. I have LOTS of brush that can work with the earth to give back!

Linda Nett-Duesterhoeft 4/12/2024 7:01 AMSharing books with friends is a favorite activity. As to borrowing rather than buying, I consulted with my local Ace Hardware store and learned I could rent a wallpaper steamer rather than buying one. I however simply used vinegar and water spray and was able to remove the wallpaper safely and efficiently.
