Sam's actions
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Action Track: Community
READ & ATTEND LET MY PEOPLE GO SURFING BOOK CLUB MEETING
Not only is it important to learn about the impact of our clothing, but it is a great way to have conversations about our impact and philosophies behind our choices. Sustainability Corner Book Club Meeting April 24 12:00-1:00pm in the Jetty Island Conference Room
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Sam Menzimer 4/19/2024 12:16 PMHappy Friday EcoChallenge Team! 🌍
Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Community Clean Up on April 17! It was a fantastic turnout and a tremendous success. Our partnership with the City of Everett and Majestic Glove provided us with the tools we needed to make a difference. Together, we tackled the litter in our neighborhood around Cascade, armed with bags, gloves, and pickers. In just two hours, our dedicated participants managed to collect an impressive 16 bags of trash in only two hours! Your commitment to keeping our community clean and green is truly inspiring. 🗑️
As we head into the weekend, let's carry the momentum of our recent endeavors forward. And don't forget, Monday is Earth Day! It's a perfect opportunity to reflect on our connection to the planet and recommit ourselves to sustainable practices. Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Sam Menzimer 4/09/2024 8:55 AMHappy Tuesday, fellow EcoChallenge Participants! 🌎Your weekly Motivation: “You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” – Jane Goodall
Here are three easy sustainable actions you can take this week:
- Say No to Single-Use Plastics: Avoid plastic bags, straws, cutlery, and bottles by using reusable alternatives. 🍴
- Turn Off and Unplug: Save energy by turning off lights and electronics when not in use, and unplug chargers when they're not charging. 🔌
- Choose Local and Seasonal: Support local farmers by buying locally grown and seasonal produce, reducing transportation emissions. 🥕
I am working on an EcoChallenge action called “Save the Bees” so I will be headed to my local nursery to get some cute potted plants for my patio that provide nectar for the bees! 🐝 You can see which plants do well in your area, and which pollinators they are helping, by going to pollinator.org and entering your zip code.
What EcoChallenge actions are you working on this week? Please share to the feed to inspire others.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Sam Menzimer 4/08/2024 11:08 AMI HATE hand washing dishes, so this one is great! On average a dishwasher uses 3-5 gallons of water per load, and hand washing can use up to 27 gallons of water! I highly encourage everyone to buy dishwasher friendly kitchenware, so you can do less hand washing. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Calculate My Carbon ImpactWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Sam Menzimer 4/08/2024 11:05 AMI learned that if everybody on the planet were to use as much as I do, we would need 3x our planet! I can definitely save carbon emissions by ordering less from online retailers, and making sure that the produce I am buying is local. -
Sam Menzimer 4/05/2024 12:15 PMHappy Friday, EcoChallenge participants! 🌎 🍃🌊As we close out the first week of Earth Month, we want to remind you that it’s not too late to invite your colleagues to join you in the EcoChallenge. We still have 25 days left of this month!
Here is how you can invite your coworkers to join:
Step 1: Follow this link to take you to the Community Transit team page: https://earthmonth.ecochallenge.org/dashboards/teams/community-transit/team_invitations/new
Step 2: Click and copy the URL on the page to send to your coworkers. This creates a custom invitation link for you!
Step 3: If you want, you can also enter your colleagues' email into the email addresses bar, and send them a personalized message, asking them to join your team! It’s as simple as that.
🌼🌼🌼
This is also a reminder that it is not too late to track your progress for this week. Did you complete a task? Remember to mark it off. Later today, I am going to work on calculating my carbon footprint and checking it off my list! 👣
One of the tasks on the EcoChallenge is to “Explore my Area” and spend 60 minutes exploring a part of your neighborhood you haven’t been in. Maybe it’s a new park, trail, or other green space. This is an easy way to get more connected with your surroundings this weekend and blow off some steam from the work week. ☀️ Enjoy your weekend!

Sam Menzimer 4/01/2024 1:50 PMMy "why" I am participated in the EcoChallenge is because I am a big lover of the ocean! It has always been my happy place. I love to kayak, swim, paddle board, and occasionally hop on a surf board. But I know that I am a guest in this space, and it does not belong to me. I want to keep the Earth and it's oceans happy and healthy for future generations to enjoy and find peace in.
