Nanditha's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 10 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Regenerative Agriculture and Me

Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 10 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Advocate for Forest Protection

Using my voice can help create a more sustainable and just world. I will contact 1 local, regional, or national decision makers to advocate for public policy that protects forests and improves their ability to sequester carbon and nourish biodiversity.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Personal Waste Audit

The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 10 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Share My "Why"

I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Consume only Needs vs Wants

The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Low Carbon Diet

Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 2 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

    Nanditha Menon 4/30/2024 5:36 AM
Regenertaive agricultural focuses on enhancing the health of ecosystems. It basically holds fertility of the soil, climate change etc.
How do we support healthy farming practices...?
We could buy products that focuses on regenerative farming, supporting the local farmers who uses friendly methods, reducing food wastes and so on.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Personal Waste Audit
What are the results of your waste audit and what did you learn? How can you reduce your waste going forward?

    Nanditha Menon's avatar
    Nanditha Menon 4/30/2024 5:32 AM
While doing a waste audit, I realised that most of my waste source was packaging, plastics, and food wastes. This revealed my consumption habits and came up with some ways to reduce wastes.
Choosing minimal packaging, having reusable items. saying no to single use plastics, making use of a compost pit etc.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Zero Waste Day
What was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?

    Nanditha Menon's avatar
    Nanditha Menon 4/30/2024 5:29 AM
Having a zero-waste day was a challenging process because it was basically avoiding any waste. It helped me realize as to how many unnecessary waste is involved in the daily life that mostly goes unnoticed. It was a valuable learning experience and understood more about it impacting the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Advocate for Forest Protection
Higher standards of living are very often dependent on moving our environmental costs elsewhere. What are some specific ways in which the environmental impacts of your own lifestyle might be shifted elsewhere?

    Nanditha Menon's avatar
    Nanditha Menon 4/30/2024 5:26 AM
Relying heavily on disposable items can increase waste.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Explore My Area
Where did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?

    Nanditha Menon's avatar
    Nanditha Menon 4/30/2024 12:57 AM
I usually go for a little walk to a park next to my home. It just helps me refresh my mind. An example that I can give is, when I have to take any decisions and my mind does not feel refreshed, or relaxed, the decision taken would often go bad and aggressive; that would be the best time for me to get to the outer calming space. It helps me take better, calm decisions rather than a bad quick one that I eventually would regret it later. Physically, it also helps me improve my health, admiring the nature's beauty, getting me and my atmosphere filled with happiness and peacefulness.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community Volunteer in my Community
How does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?

    Nanditha Menon's avatar
    Nanditha Menon 4/30/2024 12:52 AM
Volunteering usually enhances a sense of unity and collaboration amongst the members. It lets people come together and share their skills, experiences and, it leads to understanding of community issues and makes it easier to address them as well. It creates more vibrant community.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Weekly Meal Planning
How did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?

    Nanditha Menon's avatar
    Nanditha Menon 4/30/2024 12:43 AM
Planning out meals and helping in reducing food waste can feel quite rewarding. It majorly contributes to minimize waste and it brings mindfulness too.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land + Forests Plant Trees
How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

    Nanditha Menon's avatar
    Nanditha Menon 4/29/2024 10:45 PM
Planting trees allows individuals to spend time outdoors, helps you get an exposure to the natural sunlight and also reduces depression, anxiety and stress. You get to breathe fresh air as trees release oxygen which leads to cleaner and healthier air quality which can in turn improves respiratory health.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water Bottle
What did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?

    Nanditha Menon's avatar
    Nanditha Menon 4/29/2024 10:41 PM
We are so used to keeping or asking for plastic bags and this brings a challenge on how can we avoid it entirely. From single-use to any item, plastic is there everywhere.
Some actions that I can take are:
Using alternatives that are reusable; avoiding products with excessive plastic packaging etc.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Consume only Needs vs Wants
Consuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?

    Nanditha Menon's avatar
    Nanditha Menon 4/29/2024 10:36 PM
One of the challenges faced is the unnecessary purchases and activities. This is where the self awareness and mindfulness play an important role in showing what is need and want. I have started understanding the difference between needs and wants, hence, prioritizing sustainability. I will explore new tactics to align with minimalism.
