Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Climate + Air
Low Carbon Diet
Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Learn about Native Species
The world is full of unique species. I will spend 30 minutes each day learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 120 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 100 hours in my community.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Cynthia Martinez 4/26/2024 6:57 AMThe challenge has been fun and challenging. Eating a low carbon diet and learning of native landscape have been the most impactful. I am pleased I decided to participate, as the challenge has helped me become familiar with a community that is new to me, and been monumental in creating eco conscious and healthier havits. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Save the BeesWhat did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!
Cynthia Martinez 4/26/2024 6:53 AMI have not been able to participate in a planting, so have focused on creating my own native plant refuge on my patio, -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Low Carbon DietWhich high carbon foods will you eat less of, and what are some low carbon options you'll choose instead?
Cynthia Martinez 4/26/2024 6:52 AMI have been eating less beef and dairy, and instead am replacing these with plant based foods. It has been interesting as I notice my body has less cravings as I have adapted to the changes.-
Gina Ni 4/26/2024 9:00 AMAgreed, I have switched to plant alternatives and decreased my consumption of meat overall. I discovered the effects of long-term meat consumption overtime and it is not the best.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Weekly Meal PlanningHow did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?
Cynthia Martinez 4/26/2024 6:38 AMMeal planning has been something I wanted to do, but simply never started. I am seeing the benefits in saving energy, and definitely less food waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Calculate My Carbon ImpactWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Cynthia Martinez 4/04/2024 6:57 AMTransportation is my downfall. While this is in-part due to my location, I realize a need to research means of reducing this. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Consume only Needs vs WantsConsuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?
Cynthia Martinez 4/04/2024 6:44 AMI chose this challenge because I am a new empty nester. With this, having my own place to decorate and the ability to purchase what I “want” is not only costly, but I am realizing a rapid build up of items not needed. While I will donate these items, it is my goal to curb the spending and put it forth to donate to programs of my passions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Borrow Before I BuyHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Cynthia Martinez 4/04/2024 6:31 AMI shared a small kitchen appliance with a family member. This is not an appliance either of us use on a regular basis. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Learn about Native SpeciesWhat did you learn about a native plant or animal species in your region?
Cynthia Martinez 4/04/2024 6:29 AMNative plants provide wildlife enhanced protection from things such as fires and storms. This is based on the existence of natural food resources and prey/predator hierarchy. -
Cynthia Martinez 4/04/2024 6:24 AMI have joined as a means of sharing my passion for conservation and learning the many ways I can make an impact, as well as use this knowledge to encourage others.
