Explore My Area

SDG 14, 15

Each day, I will spend 25 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED 11
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Education & Livelihood

Work-Life Balance

SDG 8

During the workday, I will schedule time for daily breaks during work days to practice work-life balance.

COMPLETED 27
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Attend a Clothing Swap

Participate in the 225 Home Office Swap (April 24/25) OR host one with your Store or DC team OR start one of your own with friends and family! A clothing swap is when individuals contribute their gently-used clothing, accessories, books and more to then swap with others. It's a great way to reduce your consumption, contribute to a circular economy, and renew your wardrobe!

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Sustainably Clean Out Office Space

Our 225 Home offices are being cleaned out during April, with items going to FABSCRAP, recycling facilities, and the trash. Be sure to clean out your office area responsibly!

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Share My "Why"

I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate & Ecosystems

Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening

SDG 14, 15

Studies show a grass lawn is water intensive and on average it require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard or community to conserve water and improve habitat: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.

COMPLETED

From an early age, my family instilled a love of the outdoors and the value of protecting it. My Dad comes from a family of farmers in central New Jersey and he continued their legacy through growing our own food in a small garden, fixing things when they're broken instead of throwing them away, recycling, composting, reusing and reducing our waste. As a family, we also spent most of our time outdoors exploring, exercising, and playing.

As an adult I've maintained the same values. I studied Environmental Economics at Rutgers. I continue to try to live a zero-waste life style through only shopping secondhand or from certified "good for the planet" brand, I compost and recycle, I have switched all my cleaning products to sustainable options, and I have reduced my plastic consumption. I spent most of my weekends outside golfing, walking my dogs, or exploring local parks. My role as a planner at J Crew Factory puts me directly responsible for eliminating overconsumption by ensuring we're buying the right product at the right quantities for our customer.

I joined the Eco Challenge to continue to track my actions and encourage my coworkers to do the same.

I enjoyed the articles from EWG about the clean and dirty pesticide fruits and vegetables in the grocery store. I was sad to learn strawberries (one of my favorite fruits) is the #1 dirty pesticide treated item on the list. I always wash my produce after I buy it, but now I'm considering soaking my berries after I get them.

How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

I gave my grandmother my double bed back in December because I wasn't using it, but this month I have a friend staying with me so I am borrowing my mother-in-law's twin bed and bed frame instead of buying a brand new futon.
