Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

Low Water Gardening

Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Low Carbon Diet

Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Reduce Animal Products

One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 3 meatless meals and/or 2 vegan meals each day this week.

Freshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
What did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?

    swarna majji's avatar

Many conventional cleaning products contain harsh chemicals such as chlorine, ammonia, and phosphates. phosphorus or nitrogen can contribute to nutrient-loading in water bodies, leading to adverse effects on water quality (such as algae blooms). It’s essential to consider the environmental impact of the ingredients in our cleaning products to protect water quality and biodiversity.

Freshwater + Oceans Low Water Gardening
What are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.

    swarna majji's avatar
    swarna majji 4/26/2024 12:46 AM
Visakhapatnam, also known as Vizag, faces several water challenges due to its rapid urbanization and growing population. Here are some of the prominent water concerns in the city:
    1. Chronic Water Shortage: Vizag experiences a chronic shortage of water. The existing water sources, storage facilities, infrastructure, and distribution network are insufficient to meet the ever-expanding city’s water needs. The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) currently supplies a combined 64 MGD (million gallons per day) of water to both industries and households. However, this falls significantly short of the actual combined demand of nearly 90 MGD.
    2. Rain-Fed Water Sources: Vizag’s water sources primarily rely on rainfall. During low-rain years, this places additional burden on supply and use regulations.
    3. Groundwater Depletion: Fast-depleting groundwater reserves and scanty rainfall have impacted water availability.

Participating in community clean-up can evoke a mix of emotions, and the results are often rewarding. Here are some perspectives on how i felt:
    1. Sense of Unity and Shared Responsibility: Working alongside others to clean up your community fosters a strong sense of unity. Shoulder-to-shoulder efforts create lasting connections among residents.
    2. Environmental Impact: Witnessing the tangible results of your efforts is fulfilling. Cleaner streets, parks, and neighborhoods contribute to a healthier environment.
    3. Community Pride: A successful clean-up day instills pride in community members.
    4. Bonding and Connections: As you collaborate with neighbors, friends, and fellow volunteers, you build connections.
    5. Environmental Stewardship: Participating in clean-up programs reinforces the importance of environmental stewardship.
community clean-ups not only improve physical spaces but also contribute to a sense of purpose and well-being.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Choose Renewable Energy
If you are already signed up for your utility's renewable option, what other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage? If your company doesn't offer a renewable option, were they open to your request of this in the future?

    swarna majji's avatar
    swarna majji 4/26/2024 12:26 AM
    1. Replace Your Light Bulbs: Traditional incandescent bulbs consume excessive electricity and have shorter lifespans. Opt for LED bulbs.
    2. Use Smart Power Strips: These advanced power strips eliminate “phantom energy” by shutting off power to electronics when they’re not in use.
    3. install a programmable or smart thermostat: smart thermostats can automatically adjust heating and cooling.
    4. Purchase Energy-Efficient Appliances: When buying appliances, consider both the initial purchase price and the annual operating cost.
    5. Keep Air Vents Unobstructed: Ensure proper airflow by keeping air vents clear.
    6. Embrace natural light: open curtains to utilize natural light.

Remember, these small changes can add up over time and make a positive impact on both your utility bills and the environment!
