Sherri's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Land + Forests

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Cooking Oil Disposal

Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 90 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 8 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

I took the opportunity provided by this challenge to learn about what the national organization, Ducks Unlimited, is doing in my state. I read several fliers, newsletters, and publications and now know that it's much more than just improving the duck population in the Prairie Potholes region. Ducks Unlimited is working toward grassland restoration in my state which helps with upland birds and animals as well as waterfowl and also helps with pollution and erosion.

How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

"...not even produce bags." This got me thinking. Why do we have to put our fruit in produce bags? Bananas are self-contained; there is no need for bagging. What else can we do without? It takes planning but can be done.

Biodiversity + Wildlife Invest in Nature
What did you learn about how investing can support the environment and create a more sustainable world?

Ducks Unlimited has conserved more than 18 million acres since 1937. In my home state of South Dakota alone, 1.2 million acres have been conserved historically. DU has started a new South Dakota Grasslands Initiative with a goal to restore over 25,000 acres of grassland over 5 years. "The projects will increase carbon sequestration in soils, reduce nitrogen loss, and help capture atmospheric carbon, as well as aid flood water storage, reduce the effects of erosion, and increase migratory waterfowl biodiversity."

How does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?

I volunteered for a Ducks Unlimited Sponsor banquet. My home state, South Dakota, is an important part of the waterfowl flyway from Mexico to Canada. DU invests in wetland and grassland conservation in South Dakota in a ratio of $10 invested for each $1 raised in the state. That's impressive!

My husband and I took advantage of a beautiful spring day to take a new-to-us hike in South Dakota's Good Earth State Park. It was both challenging and beautiful!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Cooking Oil Disposal
Did anything about this action surprise you? Do you use more or less oil than you thought?

We never have leftover cooking oil. The only oil used is minimal to coat vegetables and is consumed with the vegetables. The same thought process could be applied to grease drained from cooking ground beef, though. Never put that down the drain or toilet. Drain into a can, cool, and dispose in garbage.

How did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?

I love looking at recipes and planning meals. My husband loves to cook. In this way, we share the burden of food and the shopping list.

How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

Take shorter showers. Only run faucet water when wetting, then rinsing toothbrush. Don't let faucet run to get hot water for tea; use a kettle. Water lawn as minimally as possible and only in early mornings.
