Biodiversity + Wildlife

Pick Up the Phone

I will gather a group of friends, family, neighbors or colleagues to make 1 phone calls to public officials or companies to advocate for planet-friendly policies.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Beauty and Personal Products

Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 60 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Advocate for Forest Protection

Using my voice can help create a more sustainable and just world. I will contact 1 local, regional, or national decision makers to advocate for public policy that protects forests and improves their ability to sequester carbon and nourish biodiversity.

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 4 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 5 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Use Public Transit

Public transportation reduces pollution, improves community, and creates safe streets. I will use public transit 5 miles per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Leave No Trace

I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Use Public Transit
How has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

    🌲 Eni Kovacs's avatar
    🌲 Eni Kovacs 4/30/2024 3:34 AM
Our family did not have a car. We always travelled using public transportation or if we did not have one we used to hike wherever we could. We also hitchhiked in my childhood a lot, something I consider to be ridesharing. Now using public transportation makes sense to me. It's cheaper and easier. It also helps that I have a few bus stops close to home, but sometimes I even prefer to walk (especially if I have to get to the city center, because it takes almost as much with a bus too).

*edit: I'm not sad, just caught a cold.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?

    🌲 Eni Kovacs's avatar
    🌲 Eni Kovacs 4/30/2024 3:29 AM
Spending time outside improves my mood, gives me self-confidence and helps me relax and sleep better. Of course it's great for the body too to enjoy nature and explore new things. There is always a new opportunity to discover something new in nature.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Zero Waste Day
What was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?

    🌲 Eni Kovacs's avatar
    🌲 Eni Kovacs 4/29/2024 4:36 AM
I've learnt that I make a lot of waste even when I don't mean to. I've tried multiple days to have a zero waste day but something always came along. I have to admit, I cheated a bit, because instead of throwing something out, I just left a bit on the bottom to be next day's waste. I know that many things I buy are overpacked, but there are not always alternatives. Companies should try to reduce the amount of packaging themselves. I try to do my best, but it's hard to live a waste free life especially if you're always on the go.

It was an amazing experience working together with other people to do something good for the environment and the community. We did an amazing job together, something we could not have done by ourselves.

Contributing to community cleanup efforts gives you a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Knowing that you're making a tangible difference in improving the local environment and enhancing the quality of life for residents can be incredibly rewarding.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Choose Renewable Energy
If you are already signed up for your utility's renewable option, what other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage? If your company doesn't offer a renewable option, were they open to your request of this in the future?

The most important step is to always turn the light off when I leave a room or if I know I need some light I turn on a small light instead of the main one. I also turn off appliances when I don't use them or even take them out of the socket if I know I will not be using them for a longer while.

    Let's talk about water today:
Water is fundamental to our survival. It is a unique and irreplaceable resource.
Some reasons why caring for water is crucial:
    1. Health and Well-Being:
      • Safe water is essential for maintaining good health. Access to clean water reduces the risk of waterborne diseases and ensures overall well-being.
    2. Economic Impact:.
      • Adequate water supply supports various economic sectors, including agriculture, industry, and services. It contributes to income generation and economic growth.
    3. Education:
      • Reducing absenteeism from school is directly linked to access to clean water. When children have safe water, they are more likely to attend school regularly.
    4. Environmental Preservation:
      • Conserving water helps preserve our environment. It reduces the energy required for water processing and delivery, which in turn reduces pollution and conserves fuel resources.
      • Water conservation also makes water available for recreational purposes and sustains ecosystems.
    5. Global Responsibility:
      • Water scarcity is a global challenge. By caring for water, we fulfill our responsibility to future generations and ensure a sustainable planet.
We might think that we don't have a water problem in Romania, since we have lakes, rivers and springs all around us, but this is far from the truth. Our water supplies are polluted and drought causes problems in the whole country, especially in the south. The two extremes of having or not having water are constantly above our heads: drought or flood.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Pick Up the Phone
What do all of us have in common, regardless of politics, race, religion, occupation, or place we live? How can finding common ground help us as a society and as a species?

    🌲 Eni Kovacs's avatar
    🌲 Eni Kovacs 4/28/2024 10:38 PM
All of us have one planet to live on, one environment to care for. We might only see the changes in our surrounding area, but what we do locally, affects the whole planet. We all have to fight for the wellbeing of nature to live a fulfilled and healthy life. We need common policies, goals and will to do better.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water Bottle
What did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?

    🌲 Eni Kovacs's avatar
    🌲 Eni Kovacs 4/28/2024 10:34 PM
Plastic surrounds us everywhere, but we can also take advantage of it. Besides my trusty water bottle, I also have a bigger, almost a 2l plastic water bottle, which is not that nice, but very practical and lighter to carry around. I also carry with me a reusable bag, to avoid buying plastic ones and I have metal straws (that truthfully I don't use, but have them just in case I want a fancier drink). The thing that I decided to change during this challenge and will keep to it after it ends is that I refuse to buy products that are overpacked even if I love them (like small chocolates individually packed in a bigger pack)-besides the higher cost, it's also harmful for the environment.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Who did you engage in your lunch and learn? What resources did you use? How did it go and what did you learn?

    🌲 Eni Kovacs's avatar
    🌲 Eni Kovacs 4/28/2024 10:26 PM
Besides our classes at uni me and my colleagues took the opportunity to learn a bit more even during our lunch time. We discussed further the topics presented in class and it was nice to see all the different points of view and how we go from one topic to another even without the guidance of our professors. It's true that we are now in a master's program, but it's nice too how far we've come in this few years. I also discuss environmental topics with my boyfriend and it's nice too see a completely different point of view and discover how a person who doesn't work in the field sees environmental problems.
