Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Climate + Air
Declutter My Home Without the Landfill
Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 120 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 30 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Daisy Knobloch 4/29/2024 4:39 PMI love seafood, especially sushi, but after doing more research, want to be more mindful when I go out for it. The environmental and ecological impacts of our food systems are so often overlooked, especially the fishing industry. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Understand My Water FootprintWhat did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?
Daisy Knobloch 4/29/2024 4:35 PMIt was super insightful learning about my water footprint. I share a vehicle, but go without it 90% of the time. It was surprising to see how much that influenced my water footprint, as vehicle usage isn't something I had associate much with water consumption before (both in terms of car washing and gasoline production). My recycling and low-consumption shopping habits also had a positive impact, leading me to have an overall low footprint.
There are some places I can definitely improve, such as taking shorter showers, and also places I unfortunately can't improve as a renter (such as plumbing fixtures).
While my highest footprint is from my diet (eats meat, not every day), it was surprising to see it was still well below average. This makes me want to start throwing vegetarian dinner parties for my friends to introduce them to my favorite meat-free recipes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
Daisy Knobloch 4/24/2024 7:49 PMI've been riding my bike a lot recently as the weather has been turning warmer. It's great to be able to breeze around the city and notice the little things that make communities and ecosystems so unique. -
Daisy Knobloch 4/17/2024 9:31 AMForgot my travel mug for my client travel this week, but still trying to reduce my waste where possible. The paper cups really add up, so going to be extra careful to remember it next time ;-; -
Daisy Knobloch 4/09/2024 3:32 PMDay 9 - Went on a walk to get groceries today! Feeling grateful to live somewhere I can rely on walking, biking, and taking transit to reduce my emissions. Also scoped out the bulk section of the store to try to reduce the packaging the food I buy comes in.-
Jared Mudachi 4/09/2024 8:03 PMThis is awesome! I always bring strong reusable bags when I go grocery shopping as well. Not only do they avoid breaking / ripping, but they also prevent me from using the single-use bags the grocery stores provide.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Leave No TraceEducator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?
Daisy Knobloch 4/09/2024 3:20 PMVisiting Yosemite last year I saw so much trash, and so many people disregarding other aspects of LNT including feeding animals and it was so disheartening. I wish more families and individuals familiarized themselves with LNT principles and that it was more widely talked about. Education and transparency is so important. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Consume only Needs vs WantsConsuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?
Daisy Knobloch 4/03/2024 2:54 PMIt's so easy to buy things at first instinct when you have the means to do so and aren't reflecting on the broader impacts. I've started tracking what I buy in a day (or what I don't) so I can reflect on my purchasing habits. Even "needs" such as food and toiletries can have a vastly different environmental impacts depending on what you buy, so I'm trying to go a bit deeper into this activity.
