Sarah's actions

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 15 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Attend Earth Day Fair

I will attend the Earth Day fair at Caldwell Park for an hour 11 am-4 pm on April 20th to learn more about local community groups

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 12
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 11
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 11

Climate + Air

bike instead of drive

replace one car trip with a bike ride

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 2 hours in my community.

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Plastic in Clothing and Water

Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

In one day, US consumers use 1.3 billion plastic water bottles. Check out these graphics:

It was pretty easy to plan my meals...sometimes I get ambitious and put too much on the menu...but I think we nailed it this week.

I re-use my winco plastic bags many times. I empty the bulk items into jars and rinse them right after I get home. When dry, I put in a bag for my next run. I know the scoop touches the bag, but I think the risk is pretty minimal. I also like to buy a lot at one time. In the past, I have even ordered bulk bags of rice wholesale. I don't put my veggies in bags at the store. It gets the conveyor belt a little wet. A big woven basket helps. Any other ideas?

This also reminded me of a vegetable refrigerator storage method I learned in the book Eating on the Wild Side: store veggies in plastic bags with a dozen pin prick holes. It helps keep veggies fresh. With greens you rinse, spin and then put in bag with air pressed out. I wash and re-use these dozens of times. There is probably a pricey sustainable bag that is made this way that would last longer...

I've used reusable produce bags (I found them at my old local grocery store and I'm sure they are online). They are very lightweight so I was never concerned about them adding an additional cost to my produce.
For keeping produce longer at home I've used a linen produce bag (can't remember the brand name); it helps to keep lettuce green for up to two weeks!
