Action Track: Community

Recruit another BRI Team Member

Recruit more team members.....it's not too late! The more team members, the more support! We are greater in numbers and this means more impacts daily! This action builds our community and shared efforts to protect the planet!

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Endangered Species

Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 20 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Declutter My Home Without the Landfill

Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.

COMPLETED 24
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Personal Waste Audit

The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 27
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Compost Food Waste

Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.

COMPLETED 27
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Beauty and Personal Products

Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 30 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 15 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Close Sashes on Fume Hoods When Not In Use

I will close sashes anytime I see they are open in my lab and help to save energy at BRI. Energy is wasted when equipment is running at full capacity when not in use. By closing sashes the energy consumption will be reduced resulting in less demand and less wear on the unit. (Saves Energy)

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 27
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

I have composted for years and every day I reflect on how this simple step can avoid more garbage in our world and be a resource to regenerate, even as energy/food for plants, I feel good contributing to that rather than the landfill! The only problem I have is, what to do with rubber bands, metal ties and stickers that are on the produce I purchase before consuming and then composting.,,,Hm? Any ideas out there?? Thanks :)

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Biodiversity + Wildlife Endangered Species
What endangered species did you learn about and what did you learn?

African Elephants. I did not know their ears help them with the heat and how close their relationships are with one another. In addition, how dangerous their paths are when they migrate. It's amazing to me how brave they are and how SMART they are, pretty clever negotiators too. I watched this series on Disney Plus it's amazing! AND an inside peek to their world. Check it out!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
What did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?

I learned that products that are biodegradable and free of toxins break down easily in the environment and through both recyclable and sanitation waste stream causing less harm to our environment and wildlife. Especially when derived. I did not make my own cleaning product, however I used the leftovers of my squeezed lemons with baking soda on them, on the cut, squeezed side, to clean my dishes and pans when hand washing. It's like natures scrub brush, worked great and a fine scent!

Eco Friendly cleaning products that are naturally derived, are most often biodegradable and are better for you! As they are less hazardous for the environment, they may also be less hazardous for the end user :) Allergies, skin irritations and respiratory side affects are less, or not at all! I like the Method products. They actually clean the first time around without having to use too much elbow grease. This means using less with great results. TIP! When using a spray dispenser, be sure to spray onto the washable cleaning cloth you use, instead of in the air. This help to reduce the product from being airborne too much and you can still enjoy the pleasant scent. Use powergreen technology types to cut through grease the first time! HHC Happy Heathy Cleaning!!
