Jeanette's actions

Climate + Air

Declutter My Home Without the Landfill

Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.

COMPLETED 21
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Water conservation

Even in Portland, land of rain, we should not be wasting water. I will conserve water, making use of grey water when possible, to water plants, provide water to pets, and to refill bird baths.

COMPLETED 21
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Go Plastic-Free

Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

I save the yogurt and other plastic containers for when I make my own. This weekend I made ricotta because I had whole milk, and I didn't want to run out for it. The cheese went into a container from the last time I bought ricotta, the whey is waiting for when i can make bread, and the empty plastic milk jug is being saved for self watering for my indoor plants for an upcoming vacation.

when milk is cheap, on sale, I load up and use some of it for yogurt. If I am in a hurry, I put the heated milk in a bowl with ice water to cool it down. Then the cooling water goes into the dog bowl, the cat bowl, or outside in the watering can.It takes an extra couple of minutes not to pour down the drain, but the second life before it hits the city wastewater is worth my time.

I spent some time in my sewing area this weekend. Many of my favorite clothing pieces came from thrifting, and I tailor them to fit me properly. I also have a cache of stained, ripped and other clothing that I use to cannibalize to use to repair and redo. Zippers, buttons, and pieces of t shirts used as backing when mending. Less for landfill, more to be used until threadbare and not usable anymore! I have found new ways to avoid purchasing new through this. One year a series of holey cashmere sweaters were washed in hot water, dried hot and made into slippers as Hanukah presents. And my daughter's favorite sweater is another cashmere with many many moth holes, which I darned in different colors and then applied beads onto the darns. Comfortable, colorful, and apparently the envy of many when she wears it.

I did some spring planting today in my front yard, and used water from my rain barrel to clean the bird bath and to water new plants. In the summer months I direct the rain water overflow from the barrel to plants that don't get a lot of exposure to rain due to being shaded by a large Oak tree. This way I don't have to worry about watering plants that aren't getting their share of rain, due to location.

Instead of buying apple cider vinegar, I make my own. All the apple peels and cores go into a sealable container that I keep on my porch, when I first started I did throw in a dash of purchased organic vinegar with the mother. Now I just pack with peels and cores, and a little of the last batch, and fill with water. When the container is full and has sat a while, I strain out the solids, and throw into my compost, and then funnel into a reusable glass bottle with a clamp lid. Wash out the container, pour in some old vinegar and new peels and there is it.

Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

Just filled up the birdbath with water from the pitcher catching the cold going to warm. I would be happier if songbirds were using it, so far only crows. But the songbirds do use it when it is hotter out.

Spent my break pulling up weeds invading my rose bed. I was just going outside, but standing there inhaling the air, I needed to get those weeds under control

That's another advantage of working from home - being able to spend a few minutes in our gardens planting, weeding and watering in the spring/summer!

I use Ridwell to recycle plastic bags and clamshells. That still leaves some products that come in plastic containers now. I discovered that the plastic peanut jars fit my heated hummingbird feeder, so I extend the life of each bottle by replacing with that, until the cold and weather cracks it, and then it does go to the landfill. But at least I am not buying bird feeder replacement bottles anymore. I also just created a yellow jacket trap with the plastic cannister the cat treats come in. Water, sugar, vinegar and a banana peel, with the lid snipped to allow them to enter and drown. Sorry, partner is allergic to stings and I find that hornet to be a jerk.

After a 90 minute meeting online, I went to my backyard, and decided to plant the tomatoes that I started indoors. I know that I should be waiting for May but honestly, I needed to plant them today. I dug in my raised bed, and then separated them from the pot where they actually volunteered when I used some compost (apparently not composted enough). I don't know if they will grow, but I enjoyed the break, the fresh air, the sunshine, and the smell of the tomato plants.

Extra walks with the dog, just sitting outside on the deck, trying to increase my vitamin D!
