Patricia's actions
Freshwater + Oceans
Say no to laundry detergent in plastic containers
I will use laundry sheets instead of laundry detergent that comes in plastic containers. This will reduce the amount of plastic I use. I've seen these sheets advertised and wanted to try them.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 30 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Patricia Hofmeister 4/10/2024 4:37 PMI have been using Easy Breeze sheets for laundry. Today I had a board meeting and discovered another member also uses them. We are going to encourage others to use them and ditch the plastic jugs. -
Patricia Hofmeister 4/04/2024 10:21 AMIt's frustrating to me how many participants sign up, but never check in. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Use Reusable BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Patricia Hofmeister 4/03/2024 12:04 PMThe only difficult part is no fruit in bags. Years ago, I signed a pledge at the St. Louis Zoo to not use plastic bags. I keep cloth bags in my trunk -
Patricia Hofmeister 4/02/2024 2:14 PMI volunteer at the St. Louis Zoo. When my husband and I cruise, we've noticed that ships we sail are no longer using plastic water bottles. I've shared this with the zoo and finally it's happening. The zoo has introduced SmartWater packaged water to our zoo. It will come in 18 oz, aluminum resealable bottles. The St. Louis Zoo will be the only location in the St. Louis area that this container will be available. It is a partnership between the zoo and Coca-Cola and it is an important first step toward fulfilling the zoo's environmental pledge of becoming PET and bio-based plastic free for all packaged water and soda on campus, beginning in 2025. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Patricia Hofmeister 4/01/2024 5:10 PMI believe I've been a good example to others. I train volunteers at the St. Louis Zoo. I always pick up trash. I tell others that it's not something they have to do, but many do. I also have had comments from friends at exercise when I pick up trash on the parking lot, etc. I'm especially proud that our zoo is so clean and want our guests to notice and appreciate it. -
Patricia Hofmeister 4/01/2024 5:05 PMI have joined several ecochallenges. It all started during covid. I volunteer at the St. Louis Zoo and the women in charge of volunteers provided many ways for us to be productive during this time. I joined again because I always learn so much. -
Patricia Hofmeister 3/30/2024 1:40 PMI am joining this ecochallenge to help make this planet a better place for my grandchildren.
