Gigi's actions
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 10 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 10 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Action Track: Community
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 10 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Gigi Hewitt 4/30/2024 10:38 AMA lot of things I do in my daily life are conservation focused. I have been meal prepping every week for the past two years, using a reusable water bottle everyday and I almost always bring reusable bags to the grocery store. Some of the harder challenges were a no waste day, picking up litter, and planting bee friendly flowers. Successfully completing a day of no waste would have taken a lot of prep and planning to the point that it didn't seem worth it, although I think the value here is that I started to realize how much waste I accumulate throughout the day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and OceansWhat did you learn about freshwater and oceans you did not already know? In sharing this information with people in your life, which conversation was impactful to you?
Gigi Hewitt 4/23/2024 2:47 PMI didn't know about water recycling and I am really curious to see if that is something we could implement at my house. Living in Washington we have an abundance of water and I sometimes forget that just because we don't need to conserve due to drought seasons we should still reduce our water usage. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Calculate My Carbon ImpactWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Gigi Hewitt 4/22/2024 2:58 PMDriving. I rarely take public transportation due to accessibility or efficiency. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Seek Alternative Gifts and SouvenirsHow do your consumption choices affect the health of wildlife and other communities?
Gigi Hewitt 4/22/2024 2:53 PMI bought local flowers as a gift for my friend and boyfriend instead of an item they may not use or want that could end up in a landfill. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Gigi Hewitt 4/22/2024 2:50 PMWe use a lot of plastic and a lot of it even if put in the recycling cannot get recycled! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
Gigi Hewitt 4/15/2024 4:03 PMI went skiing at the local mountain and got to appreciate how beautiful it is up there! When I am skiing I try to be extra mindful of the items in my pockets and making sure I don't drop anything because they find a lot of litter and misplaced items once the snow melts, and all of that has to get cleaned up by someone since those are all hiking trails in the summer.-
Edilyn Dulay 4/15/2024 4:49 PMYes, let's practice the Leave no trace principle :)

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in CleaningWhat did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?
Gigi Hewitt 4/15/2024 3:56 PMMy mom taught me how she made cleaning solution using lemons, and limes and vinegar. It is a natural disinfectant that we use in our sink and on cutting boards and it smells great!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Gigi Hewitt 4/15/2024 3:54 PMI use produce bags everytime I'm at the grocery store but I used to have mesh bags so I am planning to buy more of those to bring. I also forget my reusable bags sometimes so I want to make sure I have enough that I can always have one or two in my car and one or two in the house. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Weekly Meal PlanningHow did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?
Gigi Hewitt 4/15/2024 3:46 PMGreat! I also checked what leftovers I had in my fridge so I could make sure I wasn't buying extra of anything and then I made my lunches for the week and used all of my groceries plus the leftovers!
