Guadalupe's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 6 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Personal Waste Audit

The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Use Reusable Bags
How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

    Guadalupe Heraldez 4/26/2024 11:11 PM
This challenge has been way harder then expected because store give you plastic bag everywhere you go. Im not the type to carry reusable bags with me so it's been hard. The easy part I would say would have to be finding a purpose for the bags they do give me. For example I reuse them as trash bags or to store things around my home.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community Keep My Community Clean
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

    Guadalupe Heraldez's avatar
    Guadalupe Heraldez 4/25/2024 11:29 PM
I think the act of picking up litter connects me more to my community because Im doing my part in keeping my town a little more clean and I know the animals around won't being eating it and getting sick and dying.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Guadalupe Heraldez's avatar
    Guadalupe Heraldez 4/24/2024 9:14 PM
The most single use item I use would probably be straws especially when I go to Starbucks or go out to eat but I started to take my own reusable straw.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water Bottle
What did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?

    Guadalupe Heraldez's avatar
    Guadalupe Heraldez 4/24/2024 9:12 PM
I have learned that there is so much plastic around us, that it's used for so many things. I never thought about how many water bottles I end up using until now. When I fill up my reusable cup it take 2 water bottles to fill and I fill it like 3 to 4 times a day that's like 6-8 water bottles.

My eco challenge is going slow but I'm trying to get it done. I had to be in bed for almost two weeks so now I'm trying to catch up. I have been going on walks and its very nice to see nature but close and see the animals the live by the trails.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

    Guadalupe Heraldez's avatar
    Guadalupe Heraldez 4/03/2024 3:15 PM
My water footprint is 1,095 gallons/day personally and for my household it was 3,286 gallons/day. I could reduce the amount of time I shower since I take long showers.
