Sara's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Make & Take Bright Betty Lamp

Bright Betty Lamps are excellence for emergency lighting, off-the-grid, camping or simply relaxation.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Plastic in Clothing and Water

Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 120 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Forest-Friendly Foods

I will look for sustainable palm oil products with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSP) label. I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation and opt for ones that help sustain healthy communities and forests.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 30 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Share My "Why"

I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Low Water Gardening

Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.

I think pollution is the most prominent water concerns in our area. I've noted the site on making a rain garden with plans to do so in the next several years or so.

I didn't know that one out of every two breaths we take is thanks to our oceans!

I went to a park with pickleball courts and was able to explore the area a bit. The benefits of doing so were I felt more calm, peace and relaxed afterwards.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What did you learn about forest-friendly foods? How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

    Sara Hefty's avatar

I learned about the Smithsonian certification for bird-habitat friendly coffee. For me, it takes time to change my diet and going to a more plant-based and sustainable diet is something I've been improving upon for years. These articles helped continue that progress.

After reading the three articles linked to this item, I ordered four pollinator plants for our front garden!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Plastic in Clothing and Water
How did you try to catch the release of microplastics in your laundry? What did you learn in the process?

I went through the articles and watched the video to learn about microplastics in our laundry. While doing so, I talked with my husband about installing the PlanetCare2.0 on our washing machine and sent him a couple of links to review. I've added installing the PlanetCare2.0 to our home improvement to-do list!

Also, I've been wanting to move into higher-quality clothing that last longer. After reading the articles, I'm more educated to choose fabrics that will be better for the environment and have shops that I can explore when I'm ready to explore purchasing options.
