Kelly's actions
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Grow Local
I will research and plant a garden filled with native fruits, vegetables, and flowers to nurture local wildlife and ecosystems. I will find nearby nurseries that offer plants native to my area.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 45 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Action Track: Community
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 2 hours in my community.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Kelly Heffner 4/24/2024 6:59 AMIt is very interesting to me to learn how much one person can actually do to lessen the amount of waste going into our landfills. Each of us creates a lot of waste. Imagine if each of us could cut our trash at least in half and how that would affect our landfills!-
Madewell Summerlin 1261 4/24/2024 8:01 AMAbsolutely agree!

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Save the BeesWhat did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!
Kelly Heffner 4/22/2024 5:52 AMI have several species of flowers in my yard currently. Hosta, tulips and daisies, as well as the wild-flowers that grow in the field next door. Milkweed is a plant I am researching further for consideration in my flower beds. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Grow LocalHow did it feel to plant something native in your area to support local wildlife and biodiversity? What did you plant? Please consider adding a photo.
Kelly Heffner 4/22/2024 5:46 AMI have been trying to learn more about planting more "native" plants in my area. My yard has very large black walnut trees which I have learned are native to the area. I plan to start some of these trees from seeds and plant along the roadside beside my house. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
Kelly Heffner 4/19/2024 5:37 AMHiking in nature at the Navarre trailhead at Towpath trails. There are many gravel areas for biking, horse back riding, hiking, etc. Beautiful area with a lot of wildlife and scenic areas to rest (and restrooms to use along the route if necessary). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests 30 for 30 in NatureWhat have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?
Kelly Heffner 4/11/2024 5:29 AMSpending consistent time outside has helped with my allergies (house dust) and keeping active. There is always something outside to do such as picking up sticks, pulling weeds, mowing grass, taking a walk, and playing with the dogs in the lush green grass of spring! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Kelly Heffner 4/11/2024 5:27 AMI was amazed to learn about the amount of plastic that ends up in landfills per person! I feel we all need to do our part to recycle and reduce this. I believe this is something each of us can do to help lessen the load on our nations landfills! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Kelly Heffner 4/08/2024 7:25 AMI use ceramic coffee cops in place of disposable cups. Less waste for the landfills. I also re-use my shopping bags (usually paper bags because they are biodegradable). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Kelly Heffner 4/08/2024 7:02 AMI am an equestrian, and spend lots of time at various state parks, campgrounds and various equestrian facilities all over north east Ohio, and picking up litter along the trail systems can be one of the most rewarding chores! Keeping the beauty of nature for all to enjoy (hikers, riders, bicyclers, etc.!-
Christina White 4/09/2024 4:36 AMKelly, I agree that picking up litter is a rewarding chore. It looks so nice afterward!
