Rob's actions

Action Track: Community

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 5 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Pick Up the Phone

I will gather a group of friends, family, neighbors or colleagues to make 1 phone calls to public officials or companies to advocate for planet-friendly policies.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Bamboo tooth brush

Purchase bamboo toothbrush when replacing plastic toothbrush.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Endangered Species

Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 10 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Install Bird feeders in the back garden

Install a bird feeder in the garden in safe locations providing safety from the local cats.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Learn about the North Atlantic Gyre and North Atlantic garbage patch

Spend over 60 minutes learning about the North Atlantic Gyre and the North Atlantic garbage patch.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Plastic in Clothing and Water

Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Easter egg gift replacement.

My Wife and I have decided to replace our normal Easter egg gifts to each with a plant instead. Therefore our gifts this year will last longer than chocolate (years instead of hours), produce less waste in packaging, and hopefully less manufacturing pollution.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON

I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON

I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 3 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Grow Local

I will research and plant a garden filled with native fruits, vegetables, and flowers to nurture local wildlife and ecosystems. I will find nearby nurseries that offer plants native to my area.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

When we moved in to our house many years back there was a plumb tree that had been damaged and had sadly died. We removed the rest of the tree but decided to make Harry Potter style wands out the trunk that was left. They are still not finished but the children slowly work on them from time to time to perfect how they want them to look.

Thank you Kerry, could I put it in a big pot out the way and plant wild flowers that bees like around it?

If you would be interested in helping native bees, you might consider putting the remains of the stump in an out-of-the-way area. Many native bees will dig chambers into the wood, where they deposit individual eggs/larvae along with pollen for the young to eat.

Native bees are non-aggressive, provide a significant percent of the pollination we need for our flower and vegetable gardens, and are seriously threatened.

We have planted some sunflower seeds that we have over for the children in our village nursery / playgroup. Unfortunately the ones planted by the children were left outside the weekend and has been ruined by the heavy rain we had. Hopefully the ones we have planted will grow so each child gets to take one home in the couple of months.

This was done with my children, well mainly by my children as I could not walk on the soft ground. The area look a lot better after but I think next time we will need to take different sacks so we can split up the rubbish found and dispose of it at the local recycling centre. The amount of fast food company packaging litter was astonishing.

I presented a presentation about sustainability at the primary school in our village to 210 children and 18 staff members including the head teacher. The children has asked the head teacher if they can they and grow some plants / vegetables /herbs at school.
The children were also buzzing with other ideas and are going to use Emerson's 9 sustainability choices to looking into other things they can do.

I love spending time in our garden and being outside. I'm not really a TV person so recovering for a nasty knee / leg injury and not being able to walk for over 6 months has been difficult.

Spent most of the day looking for ways to prevent neighbouring cats from attacking the birds who have nested in our garden. We have Robins in a tree and something smaller than a sparrow in a bird box which had been taken down and was in the process of being cleaned up and re-painted on a table at the back of the garden so a bit exposed. Our neighbours are refusing to put bells or even collars on their cats, I've put up a sonic sensor near the shed and fence hoping that will put them off enough to leave the birds alone.

My Wife and I spent time dodging the rain today to re-pot some sunflower plants that are starting to out grow their pots. Will need to look at the rest of the plants tomorrow if the rain stops.

Forest seem to give a feeling of peace, they are also fantastic for walks or bike rides. Unfortunately we do not have a large forest near us, most of them are wildlife parks. I would love to visit one like the one California's Redwood National park which was the film location for Star Wars forest moon of Endor.

Found out that a bee keeper community use our small village hall once a month and sell local honey. Apparently local honey taken all year round can reduce hay-fever symptoms. And the added bonus is they reduce the price if you bring back the empty jar. I got a couple of different ones, the set honey is good in my coffee.

How do your consumption choices affect the health of wildlife and other communities?

This is difficult to achieve, we have noticed that a lot of items advertised to be local are not completely local. So bits we have found were extremely expensive and quality not very good compared to what it could be, its as if the price has gone up because people want to purchase local items.
But we have found local honey which is supposed to help with hay-fever in the summer so possibly a double bonus.
