Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Learn about Native Species
The world is full of unique species. I will spend 30 minutes each day learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Grow Local
I will research and plant a garden filled with native fruits, vegetables, and flowers to nurture local wildlife and ecosystems. I will find nearby nurseries that offer plants native to my area.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Land + Forests
Compost Food Waste
Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.
Freshwater + Oceans
Low Water Gardening
Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Kathryn Gadd 4/16/2024 7:51 AMI've purchased a filter bag for microplastics for use in my washing machine. I haven't used a clothes dryer once this month--have been hanging my clothes in the shower or on a rack to dry. I planted several native plants, including hydrangea and Black Eyed Susan in my backyard to attract pollinators and for their drought resistance. I also made a small backyard pond out of a stock tank that I allowed to fill with rainwater (wasn't hard to do this month!) and that has a small solar pump and native water plants to keep it clean. Hoping to attract dragonflies, frogs, snakes, and other local critters. I'll be using a raised bed system for a small veg garden this summer using my own compost and, hopefully, not having to water daily. Taking this challenge has really helped me put myself in gear and make more intentional decisions in my urban gardening this year! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Grow LocalHow did it feel to plant something native in your area to support local wildlife and biodiversity? What did you plant? Please consider adding a photo.
Kathryn Gadd 4/05/2024 12:09 PMI'm looking forward to watching the hydrangea and spirea grow in my small city backyard. I won't be able to put out flowers until it warms up consistently, but feel getting in the shrubs was an accomplishment and first of many steps. By the time I'm finished I'm hoping to create a little sanctuary for native species, and especially bees and birds.
