Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 480 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Join a Cleanup EffortHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel? What results did you see? Please consider posting a photo of your cleanup!
Meghan Fisher 4/17/2024 12:45 PMI joined a campus cleanup at the Shakopee Minnesota Emerson site where I work today and although it was a bit chilly it was also a great experience! I always enjoy the clean-up events we have, be it on-site or the nearby park my site takes care of. Not only are they a great chance to get outside and clean up your community, they're also a great way to get to know your community. I wasn't super familiar with the Shakopee area when I started at Emerson, but through a clean-up event this past summer I got a chance to explore a cool new park and found bike trail here. It also helped me get to know and build relationships with some of my colleagues that I hadn't talked to before. They're one of the many reasons I enjoy these events. If you haven't gone to a clean-up event yet I highly recommend! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-FreeWhere did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?
Meghan Fisher 4/02/2024 6:11 AMI’ve found one of the biggest single use plastic things I’ve been using daily was soap containers. My bathroom alone had pump hand soap, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash bottles. All of which were single use plastic. I’ve decided this needs to change. That change has started with bar soap. I’ve replaced all hand soap and body wash in my house with bar soap and am planning to replace my shampoo and conditioner with bar soap versions as well once I’ve used what I have. So far, it’s been a pretty seamless change, and I’ve even convinced my family to switch out body wash for bar soap as well. I’m excited to see what other things I notice I can do to use less plastic as this challenge continues!
