Freshwater + Oceans
Learn about plastic pollution
I will spend at least 90 minutes learning about how plastic is polluting our planet. I choose this goal to become more aware of the actions humans are doing and how governments can get involved.
Land + Forests
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 5 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 60 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 60 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Freshwater + Oceans
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 60 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Plant TreesHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Alyshah Dhanji 4/22/2024 6:22 AMThis was my first time planting trees and although the weather wasn't great, it was good for my mental and spiritual health by simply being in nature. Before we began, the organizer asked us to reflect and I took this opportunity to look around and just appreciate what nature offers us everyday. During the planting, I felt connected to the earth as I dug the earth, making space for this new plant. The digging and fetching for mulch was the physical part and it was a bonus to be active during this event! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and OceansWhat did you learn about freshwater and oceans you did not already know? In sharing this information with people in your life, which conversation was impactful to you?
Alyshah Dhanji 4/15/2024 6:25 AMI went on a hunt to look for a doc about seafood, similar to Seaspiracy I watched during last Earth Month, but ended up watching Chasing Coral on Netflix. This film was such an eye opener in learning about how the coral reefs around the world are disappearing, really really fast due to the water temps rising. I'd recommend watching even just to see the beauty in coral reefs. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in CleaningWhat did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?
Alyshah Dhanji 4/15/2024 6:19 AMI learned that there are SO many chemicals in the common cleaning products we usually think of buying which are harmful to both the biodiversity, but our wallets too. I've made my own all-purpose cleaner using just water, dish soap and essential oils and it costs a fraction of the cost; win-win! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-FreeWhere did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?
Alyshah Dhanji 4/15/2024 6:14 AMWhen grocery shopping, I noticed plastic showing up in the packing of items that I could have easily gotten from the bulk store. I've now made a list of items in my bulk shopping list to look out for to get them there in the future. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Use Reusable BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Alyshah Dhanji 4/08/2024 6:24 AMThis challenge was not difficult at all! I always have bags in the car to make shopping trips easy.-
Sandrine THOMAS 4/12/2024 5:58 AMI second that :-)

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Cooking Oil DisposalDid anything about this action surprise you? Do you use more or less oil than you thought?
Alyshah Dhanji 4/05/2024 6:48 PMI was reminded how even a little oil down the drain is not good for our water systems. I've taken away easy tips on how properly dispose of oil for everyday cooking, not just when you have large amounts of oil to dispose of.
