Low Water Gardening

Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

    At this current point in the year, flooding is the biggest concern. With that in mind I have planted perennial ferns and removed invasive species like Ivy to protect the native species in my yard.

    Ethical investing means something different to a lot of people, but the important thing is to understand what you are invested in so you dont invest in things that dont align with your values. This was a good reminder to update my 401k contributions into funds that align better to my social values.

    How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    In order to become more resilient to changing water situations, we need to lessen our use of water. The biggest way I have started saving water is scraping my dishes instead of rinsing and putting them directly in the dishwasher. This summer I plan to only water my garden during the coldest parts of the day.

    I am feeling good about the daily actions I was able to pretty much do everyday. I am hoping some habits related to composting, only using my dishwasher, and getting outside for 30 extra minutes a day no matter the weather!

    I planted a mixture of native wildflower seeds in my flower beds surrounding my fruit trees and vegetable gardens. I am excited to see them flourish and allow a home for the bees.

    What was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?

    Its nearly impossible to have a zero waste day. The hardest part for me was thinking oh I can run an errand real quick but remembering the gas wasted for that short trip when that errand can wait and I can do it while I am already out and about and/or wait until the weather is nicer and walk to do the errand and be completely zero waste.

    Volunteering helps me feel more connected to my community. Today I volunteered with the food bank on my own which allowed me to meet other people in my community also giving back their time. Volunteering enhances your community by giving volunteers a sense of ownership that flows into other aspects of everyday life in your community not just when you volunteer.

    Instead of buying a book for book club this month, I decided to borrow it from the library. I felt better about not buying not just because I saved money but because I didnt love the book so after reading it I would have given it away or had it sit on my shelf forever not rereading it.

      We all know that reading is good for us. It can improve brain and memory function and keep your brain operating more effectively as you age. Reading also enhances connectivity in the brain, reduces stress, promotes relaxation, improves sleep, and has the potential to decrease the likelihood of developing Alzheimer's

    I have learned a lot of plastics are not actually getting recycled so its more impactful to refuse plastic at it source i.e use a reusable water bottle of limit the amount of food I buy with single use plastics.

    I went to Woodstock Park, which is a new to me park in my neighborhood. I have enjoyed finding new green areas or parks in my neighborhood instead of always having to drive to get to a natural area. Definitely does wonders for my gas consumption and the parks are just as good.
