Shan's actions
Action Track: Community
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 43 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Reduce Animal Products
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Reduce Animal ProductsHow does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Shan Brooks 4/22/2024 4:51 PMThe meat industry necessitates large scale animal agriculture that wastes land and produces large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions. If enough of the general population substituted meat for other sources of protein, demand would decrease and such operations would be forced to scale down and pollute less. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Shan Brooks 4/22/2024 4:49 PMThe act of picking up trash that I clearly hadn't dropped myself seemed to catch the eyes of people around me and inspired them to also look around for things they could pick up.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Shan Brooks 4/22/2024 4:48 PMWater bottles are the main plastic items I find myself using. Reusable water bottles (which I do own, I just always end up forgetting them!) are very easy ways to cut down the waste created from plastic water bottles, and I've been taking care to always have one reusable water bottle out on my counter so I can see it when I'm getting ready in the morning.-
Glenda Harrison 4/22/2024 5:05 PMThis was something that hit me quite some time ago, but I had some lapses over those years. Every bit helps, so congratulations for cutting back!

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests 30 for 30 in NatureWhat have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?
Shan Brooks 4/16/2024 3:14 PMSpending consistent time outside is a literal and mental breath of fresh air. So much of our lives are spent indoors, and that displacement from nature really feels like it's contributing to our disconnect from the depreciating state of the natural world.
