Bela's actions
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Action Track: Community
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Learn about Native Species
The world is full of unique species. I will spend 10 minutes each day learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 6 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Biodiversity and Me
I will spend at least 10 minutes each day researching what biodiversity is, how biodiversity positively impacts our world, and how the loss of biodiversity harms it. I will share what I learn on the feed.
Climate + Air
Stay on the Ground
Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Climate + Air
Write Letters or Emails
I will gather a group of friends, family, neighbors or colleagues and write 5 letters or emails to public officials or companies to advocate for planet-friendly policies.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Land + Forests
Advocate for Forest Protection
Using my voice can help create a more sustainable and just world. I will contact 15 local, regional, or national decision makers to advocate for public policy that protects forests and improves their ability to sequester carbon and nourish biodiversity.
Land + Forests
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Land + Forests
Compost Food Waste
Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.
Freshwater + Oceans
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 15 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Low Water Gardening
Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 15 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Bela Banhidi 4/16/2024 8:30 AMClimate change is one of humanity's strongest challenges. It tests the mankind’ abilities in many areas. The air pollution with its reduction is one of them.Any kind of our activity pollute the air. It is obvious as we are living on the bottom of the “air ocean”. Therefore, the AIR and its quality (means fit to our and other species’ needs) are extremely important.
I used Eurowings, Tarom, KLM this year. CWT sent itinerary to each of course. I have a very positive surprise that CWT calculated my CO2 footprint to each route. Check your itinerary! Your figures must be there. here you are mine:Eurowings BP – Düsseldorf – Bp 380kgTarom Bp – Bucharest – Bp 260kgKLM Bp- AMS-BP 411kgI do not know if you feel how much are those. Let me put them into a context. My solar panel, PV PP on the roof generates green electricity for me. It operates exactly 3 years today. The Solar Edge application calculates the CO2 reduction. It means a CO2 volume that would be emitted if electricity would be generated on gas basis instead of solar panels. So, the last 3 years my system avoided to emit 7533kg CO2 that is 2511kg/year.Do a comparison between CO2 footprint of my flights and solar panels. Practically 6-7 similar flights in a year would generate same amount of CO2 that a household PV PP save in a year.Sad is that my PV electricity generation is 2 times more than I use in a year. The point is that everyone has a same CO2 footprint after 3 -4 flights than a household would generate using not renewable electricity.Calculate your CO2 footprint!Check your car emission!Hint:Optimized your trips on CO2 emission basis!Flight or drive? Consider: 2-3 people in a car reduce the individuals’ CO2 footprint unlike airplanes that multiply them.I hope you enjoyed! One Globe, One Nature, Take care of! -
Bela Banhidi 4/11/2024 3:22 AMsmall group of my colleagues spent 45 min. discussion about our personal ecological footprint. We answered and evaluate the result of the footprint calculator together. It was good to hear and see how the team is committed to save the environment and greening the world. -
Bela Banhidi 4/04/2024 5:50 AMEcological footprint calculator is a fantastic tool. You have to visit the site: https://www.footprintcalculator.org/
It might shocking and inspiring you learning how many Earth would be needed for the humankind if everyone would consume as you do. I am sure, it will trigger you to do actions and make your life more greener. Try it! -
Bela Banhidi 4/04/2024 4:48 AMhere is a great summary the right compost material preparation and treatment. I recommend to study it for those who plans or beginner at this area. Personally we do compost since years. Volume is 2 m3 . Material used for garden plants. During spring time compost boost the plant and helping the growth and maintain the health of the plants. -
Bela Banhidi 3/11/2024 2:18 AMWe are constantly shaping our environment. This is not a problem. However, all this should be done with appropriate wisdom. Excessive resource extraction means that we take more than we are able to use. This obviously leads to waste. World trade is based on supply and demand. If the demand side decreases, it will hold back the supply as well and with it the intensive extraction of resources. This is one of the ways that everyone can influence the factors that affect our world on a larger scale by shaping their own environment. Ask yourself when you want to buy something for replacing any that is still working or possible to repair, is it really necessary? Isn't it just a "good to have a new one"? Our wasteful life jeopardize the future entire Flora and Fauna of Earth. Think about the light pollution. Mankind burn a hell of energy for lighting. Less would be more that case the nocturnal creatures would not be harmed. When we push back the wildlife incl. all the species to create place to ourselves, than we are getting feel how important they are for us. The words of Paracelsius always come to mind "It is only the dose which makes a things poison".
