Biodiversity + Wildlife

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Plastic in Clothing and Water

Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 10 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

What was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?

    Priyadharshini Balaji's avatar
    Priyadharshini Balaji 4/25/2024 4:40 AM
ero waste is a lifestyle that aims to reduce the amount of waste you produce. In order to live a zero waste lifestyle, it's important to understand what constitutes as waste and how to avoid producing any in the first place. The key principles of zero waste include: reducing, reusing, and recycling.

The now famous Zero Waste Week campaign challenges people to go without creating any new rubbish for seven days. It encourages reuse and recycling by providing tips on how you can cut down your use of plastic, glass and other materials that are difficult to recycle.

The idea behind this kind of lifestyle is not just about reducing your personal impact on the environment but also about taking steps towards sustainability for future generations.

How do your consumption choices affect the health of wildlife and other communities?

    Priyadharshini Balaji's avatar
    Priyadharshini Balaji 4/25/2024 4:36 AM
Overexploitation and consumption of wildlife - through trade or as food - are major drivers of biodiversity loss. At the same time, human interactions with wildlife can increase the risk of emerging zoonotic diseases—those that originate in animals.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Save the Bees
What did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!

    Priyadharshini Balaji's avatar
    Priyadharshini Balaji 4/25/2024 4:36 AM
    1. Food Source: Nectar is the primary source of carbohydrates for adult bees. They collect nectar from flowers and convert it into honey, which they store in their hives and consume during the winter months when fresh nectar is scarce.

    2. Energy for Pollination: Bees require substantial energy for their constant flight and pollination activities. Nectar provides the necessary fuel for bees to visit numerous flowers in search of pollen.

    3. Pollination: While collecting nectar, bees inadvertently transfer pollen from one flower to another, facilitating cross-pollination and the production of seeds and fruits. This process is essential for the reproduction of many plants.

    4. Biodiversity: Planting a variety of nectar-rich plants supports not only honeybees but also other bee species, such as bumblebees, mason bees, and solitary bees. Diverse nectar sources promote biodiversity in your garden.

What endangered species did you learn about and what did you learn?

    Priyadharshini Balaji's avatar
    Priyadharshini Balaji 4/25/2024 4:35 AM
An endangered species is a species that is very likely to become extinct in the near future, either worldwide or in a particular political jurisdiction. Endangered species may be at risk due to factors such as habitat loss, poaching, and invasive species.[1] The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List lists the global conservation status of many species, and various other agencies assess the status of species within particular areas. Many nations have laws that protect conservation-reliant species which, for example, forbid hunting, restrict land development, or create protected areas. Some endangered species are the target of extensive conservation efforts such as captive breeding and habitat restoration.
