Arriane's actions
Land + Forests
Advocate for Forest Protection
Using my voice can help create a more sustainable and just world. I will contact 1 local, regional, or national decision makers to advocate for public policy that protects forests and improves their ability to sequester carbon and nourish biodiversity.
Action Track: Community
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 2 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Action Track: Community
Share My "Why"
I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.
Action Track: Community
Pick Up the Phone
I will gather a group of friends, family, neighbors or colleagues to make 2 phone calls to public officials or companies to advocate for planet-friendly policies.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Endangered Species
Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 10 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Climate + Air
Choose Renewable Energy
Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 15 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 10 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Land + Forests
Regenerative Agriculture and Me
Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 10 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.
Land + Forests
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Freshwater + Oceans
Low Water Gardening
Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 10 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 10 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Land + Forests
Carry My Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.
Climate + Air
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Beauty and Personal ProductsWhat new insights did you gain about the skincare products you use? Did you reach out to advocate for refillable or recyclable packaging?
Arriane Aranas 4/30/2024 8:16 AMSkincare products play a crucial role in maintaining healthy skin. Let's be aware of the ingredients used in every product we use and let us support brands that says no to animal cruelty. I was able to send an email/message to a local brand and suggested/encouraged them to develop recyclable packaging for their products since they claim that their products are made with good intentions and they are one with the planet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
Arriane Aranas 4/30/2024 7:59 AMMy husband and I was able to go for a morning walk in the neighborhood. Walking promotes more bonding for us. It also offers a wide range of benefits for both physical and mental health.
Physical heatlh: improves cardiovascular health, enhances strength and flexibility and boosts immune function.
Mental health: reduces stress and anxiety and boosts/improves mood. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Plant TreesHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Arriane Aranas 4/30/2024 7:46 AMMental health - Improve mood and enhancing well-being
Physical health - Promotes strength, and flexibility. Spending time outdoors exposes us to fresh air and sunlight, boosting vitamin D levels
Spiritual health - Foster a sense of connection with the Earth and a feeling of stewardship towards environment. Many cultures and spiritual traditions consider trees a symbol of growth, renewal and life, contributing a sense of purpose. -

I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to be part of this journey towards a more sustainable future. Let's carry the lessons learned and the habits formed into our daily lives, making every day an opportunity to contribute to a healthier planet. Together, we can make a difference! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Low Water GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Arriane Aranas 4/30/2024 1:36 AMFlooding is a serious concern that can have devastating impacts on communities. Addressing flooding concerns like community engagement, flood early warning systems and floodplain management can help reduce this risk. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Pick Up the PhoneWhat do all of us have in common, regardless of politics, race, religion, occupation, or place we live? How can finding common ground help us as a society and as a species?
Arriane Aranas 4/29/2024 2:11 PMWe all experience emotions and have basic needs for survival.
By focusing on what unites us rather than what divides us, we can collaborate more effectively to address challenges such as climate change, poverty, inequality, and conflict. Embracing diversity and seeking common ground can lead to greater social cohesion, resilience, and collective progress as a society and as a species. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Advocate for Forest ProtectionHigher standards of living are very often dependent on moving our environmental costs elsewhere. What are some specific ways in which the environmental impacts of your own lifestyle might be shifted elsewhere?
Arriane Aranas 4/29/2024 2:08 PMThrough the production and disposal of the products I consume. If I rely heavily on imported foods, the environmental impacts of transportation, such as greenhouse gas emissions from shipping, may be shifted elsewhere. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINARWhat did you learn in the webinar? Did anything surprise you?
Arriane Aranas 4/29/2024 2:05 PMThe experts showed the percentages of each species that are threatened with extinction. Additionally, us humans, are the cause of species endangerment due to pollution, overexploitation, etc.
-
Arriane Aranas 4/29/2024 12:33 PMWhen grocery shopping, choose locally sourced and seasonal produce. This reduces the environmental impact associated with transportation and supports local farmers. Additionally, buying seasonal produce often means fresher and tastier food. -
Arriane Aranas 4/28/2024 5:00 AMPlanting native trees is better than planting exotic trees. Native trees (such as Narra, Molave, etc) promotes growth and biodiversity of the area, and more effective in preventing soil erosion Exotic trees (such as mahogany, acacia, etc) might introduce invasive insects and diseases, and supresses or prevents the growth of native trees around them.-
Jennilyn Hilario 4/29/2024 4:48 AMI agree. Planting these trees in the forest will also help reforestation. -
John Andre San Miguel 4/29/2024 4:25 AMYes, and you can get local supply to if you plant fruit or vegetable bearing trees!
