Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Learn about Native Species
The world is full of unique species. I will spend 2 minutes each day learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Reduce Animal Products
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 2 meatless meals and/or 2 vegan meals each day this week.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 5 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Climate + Air
Low Carbon Diet
Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.
Land + Forests
Regenerative Agriculture and Me
Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.
Land + Forests
Advocate for Forest Protection
Using my voice can help create a more sustainable and just world. I will contact 1 local, regional, or national decision makers to advocate for public policy that protects forests and improves their ability to sequester carbon and nourish biodiversity.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Freshwater + Oceans
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 5 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 5 hours in my community.

Olivia Anger 4/30/2024 11:04 AMTry some loose-leaf tea for zero waste days or any other days! My favorite tea is dried chamomile, fresh mint from the garden, and honey: it's easy on a sore throat, and it's delicious! If you like tea from tea bags like me, try contacting the company to find out what they use for their tea bags! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Save the BeesWhat did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!
Olivia Anger 4/30/2024 10:54 AMI planted a few different plants: evening primrose, ground ivy, scabiosa, and echinacea, for example, which I was glad to find at an organic plant nursery. An employee there helped me to find plants friendly for various insects, including bees. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Calculate My Carbon ImpactWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Olivia Anger 4/30/2024 10:40 AMI emit a lot of carbon during travel, such as travel with the car or by plane. Unfortunately, we have more trips planned by plane this year. Maybe we can use a carbon offset? I would also like to try to use as much public transport as possible. Maybe I can reduce my waste more with zero-waste, seasonal, and low carbon choices. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Low Carbon DietWhich high carbon foods will you eat less of, and what are some low carbon options you'll choose instead?
Olivia Anger 4/30/2024 10:27 AMI learned that traditional Mediterranean, pescatarian and vegetarian diets are definitely lower in carbon emissions than a regular diet including meats. I will try to prioritize legumes and consider adapting to a more Mediterranean diet. I already try to reduce meat intake and do not consume dairy products. -
Olivia Anger 4/29/2024 10:43 AMTime to pick up some trash! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and OceansWhat did you learn about freshwater and oceans you did not already know? In sharing this information with people in your life, which conversation was impactful to you?
Olivia Anger 4/29/2024 10:32 AMI learned about how water scarcity can impact us as only 0.5% of water is useable and available freshwater, however terrestrial water storage has dropped 1cm per year in the last 20 years and rising sea levels will result in extending the salinization of groundwater. But I learned about some great tips that you can do to save water: filling a bowl when washing up or rinsing vegetables, using leftover cooking water or water used to rinse vegetables to water the garden, fitting low flow aerators on faucets, and filling up a jug of water to refrigerate when you want cold water. Let's try it out! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Zero Waste DayWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Olivia Anger 4/29/2024 12:32 AMIt was definitely hard to have a Zero Waste Day. Most of all, I found it hard to think about the food I was eating. While I didn't bring plastic and paper food packaging down to zero, I did attempt to reduce it. After all, I had learned that recycling is important to zero waste, although the main priority is to stop waste at the source. I tried to do the best I could. For example, I found some plant-based milk at the store in glass instead of plastic and a glass jar with oat milk powder you can mix to make milk. I used loose leaf tea today and stopped at the store for a bar of hand soap and a shampoo bar (granted, I didn't read the directions carefully and realized afterward that I'd rather not use a vinegar rinse, so I will donate the shampoo). Due to stores being closed on Sunday where I live, this meant that I had to use the shampoo in a plastic bottle, but I am determined to try again. I also planned zero waste meals, using fresh unpackaged veggies to make a veggie fry for lunch and a soup for dinner with chickpeas for protein (they came in a glass jar, not in bulk, but I will give the jar to the local food bank as they can use it to repackage large quantities of items). For the soup, I found a recipe to make my own veggie broth using scraps (which I generated a lot of today-yay!)
At the end of the day, I am proud of my efforts to reduce waste, but I now know where I can do better. So I made myself a list with help from the websites recommended by EcoChallenge.
I learned that its pretty hard to reduce waste, but you can set yourself up for success with a few steps. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Advocate for Forest ProtectionHigher standards of living are very often dependent on moving our environmental costs elsewhere. What are some specific ways in which the environmental impacts of your own lifestyle might be shifted elsewhere?
Olivia Anger 4/27/2024 11:16 AMThe environmental impacts of my own lifestyle might be shifted to the forests and oceans, where wood and plastic and fossil fuels are sourced, thus negatively impacting these ecosystems. Also, forests are cut down to make room for agriculture. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Regenerative Agriculture and MeWhat did you learn about the practice and benefits of regenerative agriculture? How can you support healthy farming practices for people and the planet?
Olivia Anger 4/27/2024 11:13 AMI learned that regenerative agriculture is a philosophy that views agriculture as a web, not as a supply chain. It focuses on soil health and there are a variety of practices: I learned about using cover crops, no-till farming, and viewing the importance of animals in this farming. There are many benefits of regenerative agriculture: carbon sequestration, health for animals and farmers, biodiversity...
I can support healthy farming practices here by shopping at the health food store. While organic isn't the same as regenerative agriculture, it has various products with Demeter biodynamic certification, which I learned is a type of regenerative agriculture. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Leave No TraceEducator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?
Olivia Anger 4/27/2024 11:05 AMI feel I would most like to focus on traveling on durable surfaces. It's important to work on and it can be challenging but is doable, even though I don't camp, but may be in the park or something.
