Land + Forests
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 10 hours in my community.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 30 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Climate + Air
Low Carbon Diet
Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.
Climate + Air
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Biodiversity and Me
I will spend at least 5 minutes each day researching what biodiversity is, how biodiversity positively impacts our world, and how the loss of biodiversity harms it. I will share what I learn on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Ammar AlMousa 4/05/2024 5:53 AMDue to generally hot weather and less availability of public transportation. We predominantly rely on personal cars as method of transportation in our community, however in many cases you realizes that carpool option is there (your relative/friend/neighbor/colleague) are going to the same place at the same time. Especially now in Ramadan where most go to mosque and back for iftar at around the same time. So when you are more about your behavior you will find ways to improve your carbon footprint, and carpooling provide an opportunity to connect with your community rather than driving alone.
This is just one example of many actions we can examine and improve upon. -
Ammar AlMousa 4/05/2024 2:19 AMWe are making significant strides as participants actively engage in reducing waste, conserving resources, and advocating for biodiversity preservation. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Low Carbon DietWhich high carbon foods will you eat less of, and what are some low carbon options you'll choose instead?
Ammar AlMousa 4/05/2024 2:16 AMI did not realize how much high carbon intensive process it is to make coffee, something that i consume a lot daily. Therefore, I will switch to consuming more tea, particularly green tea or herbal teas, which have a lower carbon footprint compared to coffee. Tea production generally requires less land, water, and energy compared to coffee cultivation, making it a more environmentally friendly choice. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Biodiversity and MeWhat did you learn about biodiversity and how are you connected to it through everyday actions?
Ammar AlMousa 4/04/2024 2:00 PMAs a Saudi, I've learned about the rich biodiversity in my country, from the diverse desert landscapes to the unique marine ecosystems along the coast. I understand that my everyday actions, such as conserving water, reducing waste, supporting local agriculture, and respecting natural habitats, directly impact the health and preservation of Saudi Arabia's biodiversity.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Understand My Water FootprintWhat did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?
Ammar AlMousa 4/04/2024 6:18 AMI discovered that not only direct water consumption, such as showering and washing dishes, contributes to my water footprint, but also indirect factors like the production of food, clothing, and other goods.
To reduce and be more aware of the water I use, I plan to take the following action:
Monitor Water Usage: I will track my daily water consumption and identify areas where I can make reductions or improvements. This includes monitoring shower times, fixing leaks, and being mindful of water use during household chores. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-FreeWhere did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?
Ammar AlMousa 4/04/2024 6:16 AMOne surprising encounter with plastic in my life was realizing the extent of its presence in everyday items that I had never considered before, such as tea bags, clothing fibers, and even some brands of chewing gum. It was eye-opening to see how deeply entrenched plastic has become in our daily routines and consumer products.
The main alternative is to use stainless steel or glass water bottles instead of single-use plastic bottles. Not only myself, but encouraging my family and coworkers to do the same.
