Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Beauty and Personal Products

Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 30 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Plastic in Clothing and Water

Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Regenerative Agriculture and Me

Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 30 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 5 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 60 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Low Water Gardening

Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Carry My Trash

I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 30 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Use Muscle Power

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Compost Food Waste

Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 3 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

Just read the news on GMOs -
The PH Court of Appeals (CA) has halted the commercial propagation of Golden Rice and Bt eggplant due to concerns over their environmental impact. This reflects the need for comprehensive scientific understanding before proceeding with genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The case highlights the importance of balancing technological advancements with precautionary measures to address the potential risk it associates with. We as ordinary consumers should be careful in selecting, knowing and understanding the food we consume. It's important to thoroughly check the safety of genetically modified foods to protect us and nature.

While jogging from SM North Edsa to the Quezon Memorial Circle in Quezon City, Philippines, I passed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Nursery compound (fenced), and the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife. Although the park is fenced, and at the other side of the road is ongoing construction of the metro railway, the sidewalk feels cooler and windy due to the tall trees and big shrubs seemingly a little forest at the center of the metro.
The park is a refreshing escape and a chance to immerse in greenery amidst the business of the city. The park shelters rescued animals.
There is a minimal entrance fee per person.

Easterlies to prevail over Metro Manila, and rest of the Philippines. Metro Manila just have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the easterlies and localized thunderstorms. It relieves slightly the extreme heat we feel this summer season and El Niño.

In my hometown, evident that there are still communal gardening per zone as managed per barangay police and safety officer (BPSO). These gardens were cultivated, turned from a desolated or uninhabited land determined by the barangay. Communities do cultivate and plant vegatables, and fruit-bearing trees. They do visit and water them daily. The harvest are either donated to the barangay or distributed to those who are in need, or by those caretakers. At times, they sell and we support them. Our family has a small backyard and we turned it into a small garden planting tomatoes, eggplants, squash, papaya, etc.

Addressing concerns about exposure to microplastics.
Exposure to microplastics and suggests ways to reduce risk. Boiling water and using a coffee filter may help remove microplastics. Other suggestions include choosing plastic-free goods, consuming minimally processed foods, and drinking filtered water.
Personal responsibility in avoiding plastic pollution by making mindful purchasing decisions and saying 'no' to unnecessary plastic items.

More and more, i am seeing my wardrobe gradually shifting to linen and cotton clothings. Awareness came from my system 4 years ago, and i was introduced to these types of clothings. Knowing that it is ustainable, it become a habit to me of checking the clothings tags before buying. Some clothing shops most often does not have good combination of these clothing materials so I tend to look for them at thrift stores (second-hand shops).
These clothings are breathable and comfortable to wear which is best during summer in Manila.

Shifting to refillable and recyclable packaging.
We were used to buying skincare, hair products, detergents and cleaning products in sachets. But more and more, we see some companies shift their packaging into refillables and recyclables, thus, we support them. I encourage my other households to shift, and more often we buy in bulk to save. We also support and buy to those shops and stores who accepts us bringing our own bottles or containers, and pay at a lower price.
