Adrian's actions
Climate + Air
Turn Off Unused Lights and Electronics
Make sure to turn off anything that is not being used to reduce carbon footprint.
Land + Forests
Carry My Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Land + Forests
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINARWhat did you learn in the webinar? Did anything surprise you?
Adrian Once 4/30/2024 5:21 AMOne thing that stood out to me as someone working in Emerson is how much the company is working towards having a sustainable future. The different initiatives and and how every individual tries to lessen their impact to the environment shows how no matter how small our efforts are, it will collectively be better in the long run. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Zero Waste DayWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Adrian Once 4/30/2024 5:19 AMPersonally it's easy for my lifestyle. I usually plan my food when I do grocery wherein I have to avoid scraps as much as possible. Other than that, I'm just mainly on our home and when everything is already available, i didnt have to do much to achieve my goal.
Another thing to consider is to make this span a few more days instead of a single day to actually see how having zero waste impact our habits. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Plant TreesHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Adrian Once 4/30/2024 5:16 AMI used an app that allows us to plant trees using points after using their app. I guess the impact to me personally isnt that great since I didnt do the tree planting myself but it's still nice to know that I helped in keep the forests of the Philippines heal. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Online Energy AuditWhere did you do an energy audit (work, home, school, other) and what did you learn?
Adrian Once 4/30/2024 5:14 AMHome:
We already limit the usage of aircon these past few months but the climate in the Philippines is unbearable these past few weeks. It's noticeable how much additional energy it uses due to the temperature.
I also realized how energy efficient our refrigerator and washing machines are. It might cost higher upfront, it will be beneficial in the long run not only financially but also the total carbon emissions of its production. Still, we have to be reminded that borrowing/buying second hand could still be better if we are considering our impact in the environment -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Calculate My Carbon ImpactWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Adrian Once 4/30/2024 5:07 AMI emit the most during RTO days since in addition to the commute, we also have to consider the carbon footprint of the food we eat and the building we use. However, as much as we want to reduce the carbon footprint we emit daily, it's already an integral part of my daily routine which can't be changed that easily.
Truth be told, we can only do so much. I can use the public transportation but when the system that are supposed to help us aren't in place, doing the alternative doesn't seem to be that feasible. We still have to balance the comfort while keeping in mind our actions that affect the environment. This would be my personal goal as I might not be able to reduce this output directly, I'll still try to find some ways reduce it in some aspects. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Adrian Once 4/30/2024 4:45 AMAs someone that doesn't go out that much, starting within the neighborhood is a great start. Personally I don't litter but I now have a conscious decision to pick up trash(at least the small ones) to dispose them properly. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Carry My TrashThis is no small task! What was eye-opening to you throughout this action? How will you change your actions going forward to reduce the waste you produce?
Adrian Once 4/30/2024 4:44 AMReduction of trash is easier than carrying them. Having the mindset to think whether I would produce more trash when buying stuff greatly reduced the waste I produce. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Consume only Needs vs WantsConsuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?
Adrian Once 4/30/2024 4:43 AMSometimes it's hard to discern what is considered as a want vs a need. It might seem obvious at first glance, but lifestyle changes affect our perception on how we do our day-to-day task.
We have to be conscious on discerning what is really a need compared to what we actually get on a daily basis due to our financial capabilities. This is not saying to skimp on things and only retain the "needs", but having a conscious reminder on these stuff will help us cut down on those things. -
Adrian Once 4/23/2024 3:20 AMDont forget to sign up to the "ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR" happening tomorrow :) -
Adrian Once 4/06/2024 3:43 AMFell asleep last night with my desktop still turned on. I even created my own personal action to "TURN OFF UNUSED LIGHTS AND ELECTRONICS". After living for some years, I already accepted that setbacks like these happen all the time and things don't have to be perfect.
Just a reminder to not be too hard on yourself if things don't go well as expected. Applies in other areas of your life as well :)
-
Unaiza Santos 4/07/2024 5:56 PMI love it! Thanks for this timely reminder! Yes, definitely applies to all areas of life! <3 -
Ryan Josue 4/06/2024 8:30 PMThis used to happen to me often in college! haha at least it triggered a change that will serve as a reminder for the days to come. -
Jude Christian Cervantes 4/06/2024 8:22 AMA great reminder! Yes, setbacks can happen in our target actions, but that should be OK and we just need to form a habit :)
