To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Freshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
What did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?

I learned that most of the cleaning products I use are very toxic and can threaten the marine life. They have chemicals that can cause water and air pollution. I will try to create my own cleaning products.

For the past couple of years, I have been involved with a company sponsored clean up event in collaboration with the Hudson Riverkeeper - the Riverkeeper Sweep. Our next sweep is this Saturday. Working with others to clean up the community feels very rewarding, but it also eye-opening. It is always surprising to see how much litter lines our waterfronts, both small and large scale. From hundreds and hundreds of bottlecaps to tires and more, every bit we pick up makes a difference.

Biodiversity + Wildlife Beauty and Personal Products
What new insights did you gain about the skincare products you use? Did you reach out to advocate for refillable or recyclable packaging?

I learned that some of the products I use are advertised as clean or vegan. I also learned that Sephora and Ulta offer, or will offer, a means of recycling empty cosmetic containers. I've started to take into consideration buying bulk or the larger sizer products and refilling my regular or mini size versions instead of buying multiple regular-size items. I've done this for moisturizer, soaps, and conditioners.

Wanted to share that I went thrift shopping the other day and was able to get a hand on some nice, hefty glassware for my apartment, as well as some secondhand children's books for my niece and nephew. Love being able to outfit my home with secondhand and unique pieces. Thrift shopping, Buy Nothing facebook groups, and other means of secondhand are a great way to find items, rather than buying new.

What I also enjoy is making things from materials I have - glass jars and glass yogurt containers. Great candle holders, plant starters, snack dishes! So many things to use and just get creative :-)

It's been a great reminder of what I value and new ways I could do more. Every year I do this, is validating and eye opening. This year I'll be presenting at the WSP NYC Office highlights of the Climate Management Act. This policy will help this city and hopefully our country reduce GHGs.

My Ecochallenge for 2024 is going great! I believe it is important to consistently be conscious of how our actions impact the environment, and to take small steps in preserving resources. The Ecochallenge has motivated me to begin volunteer work with a local conservancy group.

Land + Forests Borrow Before I Buy
How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

My friend and I swap clothes from time to time. It reduces the amount of new clothes we buy and helps us keep in contact with each other on a regular basis.

I attended the Earth Month Ecochallenge: Conservation & Action on earth day. It was interesting to learn the different ways other people are doing to protect Earth.
