Museum of Life and Science

Our commitment to conservation is exemplified through our efforts on campus, in partnership with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), through the Species Survival Plan (SSP) for the red wolves, radiated tortoises, and ring-tailed lemurs. We also support off-campus efforts through partnerships with local wildlife and educational organizations, supporting sustainable butterfly farmers, and donations to conservation causes.

I learned that most of my water footprint is "virtual water" coming from food, travel and pet food. I didn't realize cat food needed so much water to be produced. I always think of water waste in things like running the dishwasher too often or taking too long of a shower but water is required for everything we do and use.

My most direct use of water is definitely showers- I'm trying to do the timing my showers with a song trick to limit them. So far that has worked well!

I am starting a year-long biodiversity survey at White Pines Nature Preserve in Chatham County. Last night I put up moth sheets at the preserve and had some amazing results!

Hi Museum Team! Just a reminder that tomorrow is our monthly Campus and Community Clean Up- you can join us if you want to mark off 'join a clean up effort!" :)

I meal prepped my lunch for this week and because I knew it would be a shorter week since I'm going out of town, I prepped a smaller amount than usual to make sure I wouldn't waste food! I made Greek chicken meatballs and salad and I'm excited for lunch this week!

My food and transportation are both pretty high! Transportation comes down to lobbying for better public transport, because Durham is pretty rough right now. I certainly can change my food habits to keep reducing that output!

I'm looking forward to all the learning and activities that we all will be participating in. What would you like to learn about or do in a staff brown bag?

I'm so excited to participate in this challenge! In particular the needs vs wants challenge is compelling to me- I'm ready to challenge my assumptions on what I "need."
