Action Track: Community ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
What did you learn in the webinar? Did anything surprise you?

The most surprising part of the webinar was learning how much weight animals actually add to the Earth compared to insects and other things. It was good to learn more about Emerson’s growth into our sustainability that we are at now and where we are trying to become even better.

Land + Forests Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Beyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?

Forests not only help with erosion (which is seen in more populated areas that have been cleared of trees), but also help to maintain the water filtration in the water cycle that we learn about as children. Forests offer enjoyment for me, to hear all of the animals that I might not see on a daily basis. They offer me a peaceful getaway to regroup and help to calm my mind as well. A hike through the woods offers mental health benefits as well as physical benefits.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Consume only Needs vs Wants
Consuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?

    Jillian Taylor 4/20/2024 5:55 AM
I have learned that the hardest wants to change for me were snack foods and ease of use items. It was difficult but had some positive changes and so I will monitor myself more going forward to moderate my needs vs wants like I did this month.

Land + Forests Regenerative Agriculture and Me
What did you learn about the practice and benefits of regenerative agriculture? How can you support healthy farming practices for people and the planet?

It was interesting to learn that native cultures have done this to not overwork the land but we moved away from it. It is difficult to find a regenerative farm that is for plants in Houston but there are a few nearby for regenerative agriculture meat. I hope to see more of these farms in the future.

Correction, there was one regenerative farm called Skyfarm on Post that is a rooftop farm focused on soil and education. So that might be cool to check out.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Borrow Before I Buy
How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

I took this chance to borrow some buckets/basic plastic sheeting for a leak rather than buying them from the store. Once the leak has been fixed, I will return the buckets and plastic. After borrowing these things, I then lent some extra heavy duty plastic cover for another's needs and will receive that back once they are done.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Calculate My Carbon Impact
Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

    Jillian Taylor's avatar
    Jillian Taylor 4/06/2024 12:08 PM
I could choose to eat more vegetarian meals and that would reduce my carbon footprint. Also I could look into buying more locally grown food.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

    Jillian Taylor's avatar
    Jillian Taylor 4/02/2024 4:33 PM
I learned that my water footprint for my household is pretty good, the changes we made since previous water footprints have helped to lower our use. The highest footprint we have is virtual footprint because of our diet and our pet food, I think I will try and make some more vegetarian dinners to try out.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Freshwater + Oceans Dishwasher Efficiency
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    Jillian Taylor's avatar
    Jillian Taylor 4/01/2024 3:18 PM
My region/household can prepare for changing water situations by ensuring to use the water set aside for natural disasters and refilling it periodically to keep for emergencies. To also use rainwater for watering plants by placing a bucket outside. Also showering quickly reduces water usage.
