According to some estimates, more than 80 percent of the U.S. population consumes the standard American diet. If all of those people converted to a climate-friendly diet, the carbon emissions savings would be roughly equivalent to driving 1.34 trillion fewer mile

Soooooo, I was able to not eat beef for 28 days during this challenge. I'm only eating chicken 3 times a week.
I LOOOOOOVE cheese but I made myself work for it. I only bought a 2 small blocks cheese for the month.
I can't tell you how busy this month was for me and I did not get around to trying a cheese alternatives. A coworker did suggest a few and I promise I'll try one on my next grocery run.

What endangered species did you learn about and what did you learn?

Black rhinoceros. Sadly the black rhino horns are worth more than diamonds. Poachers are desperate for the money. In Asia they use the horn for traditional meds and status symbol to display wealth.

I wish our status symbols were based on ... something else :(

Normally I see maintenance out around the apartment picking up litter but today it was the apartment Manager himself :) Funny thing is that I was going to get that this evening. Every time I take out the trash or walk to my car, I pick up along my way. We have a problem that I have been racking my brain to fix. It is VERY windy here and paper items and etc blow out every day. I know a lot of it is due to the stormy weather we have had but also the office told me at one point that April-May is the busiest move-in & move-out season. Everyone is filling the dumpster in lightning speed.

I'm glad they don't like seeing trash in the neighborhood also :)

In one area where I lived we were able to get latches for the garbage receptacles. It helped some with blowing trash, but requires residents to be diligent with closing the lids.

Great idea thanks. These are industrial dumpsters. It has a wooden fence around it but there is a 2ft gap at the bottom?????? The fence was probably put there for aesthetics. I was thinking that they could build out on it or chain fence the bottom. I just moved here this month and I guess I'm going to be busy, but coming up with a solution is my goal!

Biodiversity + Wildlife Leave No Trace
Educator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?

I am an assistant scout master for my daughter's BSA troop. We care about the environment and our city. We have been working on leave no trace while on camping trips. We have also participated in Beach Sweep, which is a beach clean up effort in the fall at Myrtle Beach. Scouting builds a lot of this great foundation and I am happy to be a part of it.

Thanks Kat....It is one of our favorite trips from last year.

Fun Fact: One of the craziest things found was a couch that someone left on the beach

Climate + Air Weekly Meal Planning
How did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?

My meal planning saves me on time day today in my family. have these premade meals has eliminated wasted food and helped with healthier eating. I use to find myself throwing some food out due to not getting to them before it went bad, but having them prepared kind of forces you to get to the meals as well as saving time from having to make from scratch.

    Freshwater + Oceans Dishwasher Efficiency
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

Using the dishwasher instead of hand washing uses less energy, less water & less soap. Also it saves time. Where as hand washing uses a lot of time. Hand washing uses more water and soap that would go to waste. And the dishes wouldn't be as clean as the dishwasher would have them.

Freshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Scott Powers's avatar

I use bubba cups instead of buying plastic bottle water.
I try not to use the plastic bags at stores. I try to use the reusable bags from every store I shop, ie.. Sprouts reusable bag, Kroger reusable bag & Marshall's etc...

    YANGTZE FINLESS PORPOISE
A report has warned that the number of Yangtze finless porpoises has dropped to just 1,000 in the country's longest river - less than half of what there were in 2006. It blamed the decline in the mammal's numbers on food shortages and human disturbances, such as increased shipping traffic. The Yangtze are only in China

Checked out the wiki :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-carbon_diet Yes there is one!

Sad face: Bottled water is another example of a highly packaged food product that is considered a single-use plastic because most people discard it after they're done drinking the water. It is estimated that Americans throw away 40 million plastic water bottles every day, and bottled water is often shipped trans-continentally. Carbonated water must be chilled and kept under pressure during storage and transport so as to keep the carbon dioxide dissolved. This factor contributes greater energy usage for products shipped longer distances.
